700m Wifi & Linux

Thread Starter
Hi, I am trying to get Fedora Core 4 running with WiFi and its running me around in circles. I tried using Ndiswrapper (SP) and I thought I had it going, I saw my router via Terminal but it wouldn't connect. I don't even think I was going about it the right way. If someone could please help me out with a step by step process just for WiFi going to a WEP router I would appreciate it. I thought I was doing it right with the ReadMes but I think I am missing a step that isn't obvious to me.

I really want to learn linux for fun and to set up a server eventually. I started with Fedora and liked it, but Wifi never worked. Is there another distro that has the built in packages like fedora but has better hardware support, namely the wireless in the 700m (Intel 2200BG).

Sorry for such a noob question but we all have to start somewhere and I have been searching like crazy to no avail

your mistake is using FC4, that distro sucks. But at any rate, the 2200BG has its own drivers fro linux and you dont need ndiswarpper

What version of linux would you suggest for best hardware support out of the box (and preferably easy of use) for the 700m? I might try Unbuntu next because a lot of people like it.

Thanks for the link.

i like ubuntu too. and actually...i am using it right now (yes i know i made a xandros post but i am back on ubuntu because i need to use KINO and i wasn't about to screw with xandros ....i have a movie project i have to edit thats due tomorrow).

ya, ubuntu worked with my i6000 out of the box. suse 10.0 is awesome as well. i would try suse first, especially if you prefer KDE.
i would try ubuntu. suse is SLOW LIKE A DOG. and Gnome > KDE anyway
post #7 of 23
Personally, I use gnome and I'm fine with it. If you're looking at ubuntu, but want KDE, you can always try kubuntu. Or just install ubuntu and then KDE. I liked ubuntu, but I've since realized that I like gentoo even better.

Thanks for the suggestions, I prefer Gnome and I am downloading Ubuntu right now!

Ubuntu worked out of the box for me on my 9880 (same Machine I think) except for the wireless... but that worked with ndiswrapper...

you do not need ndiswrapper for supported chips!!

i suggess you and whoever mentions ndiswrapper for any wlan chip that comes up to do some reading

Sehr Danke abf! Still downloading the Live DVD of Ubuntu but from the web site I can tell its going to be good. Now I will just have to see if what I learned from FC4 still apllys lol. I have only ever used FC because all I ever had contact with in person was an FC fan, but the Internet and broadband can change that Woot!

Thanks, its sometimes frustrating trying to learn something totally new and all the gurus feed you info but don't tell you what to do with it. Its kind of hard to explain, I never used DOS except for one game (Scorched Earth!) so this is way out there for me. And I try to remember this when I assist in instructing microsoft classes at my local community college. Many people here starting out with computers for the first time, I hope one day Linux because just as easy to use, and more widely supported!

BTW I am trying to code my website to comply and look good in IE/FireFox/Opera and its funny lol. I got opera and I think its awesome browser, has some nice features that are more stable than firefox. But, by golly, there is a lot of homebrew html/CSS/Javascript that just doesn't look right in Opera where it looks just fine in IE/FF. I wonder what my web site looks like on Safari?

Hey, just installed Ubuntu and it detected the wireless card right off the bat and set it to the default network interface! Now all I have to do is figure out how to connect to my router. I'm sure there is documentation out there for that. I did find a site called the Ubuntu Unofficial starter guide and while reading that it looks like it will be easy to install stuff on Ubuntu as well with apt-get! Sorry that I sound so excited, I am just glad to have a linux distro that seems to be working like its supposed to. Only other grip I have is that it wount let me change the resolution from 1024x768 through the gui tool, but again I am sure there is something out there that will tell me how to get widescreen support!

Thanks!

fun stuff. thats interesting, ubuntu configured my 1280x800 resolution out of the box. All you have to do is:

Applications ---> Run ---> "gnome-terminal"

Code:
#: sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

edit the section where it talks about resolutions and restart X (alt+ctrl+backspace).

To connect to your router:
-double click on networking icon on the upper right of your screen (looks like a computer)
- for device, type in "ath0" (or whatever your card is called)
-click properties
- check "this card is configured" and pick you SSID from drop down menu and type in your wep key.
- press OK and press "Activate"

enjoy the net.

www.ubuntuguide.org is an amazing website and i highly recommend you use it to get your stuff set up and running.

apt-get install konqueror.

safari uses the konqueror engine to draw, so if it looks fine in konqui, it will work in safari.

what linux are u using ??
I've yr using Breezy, Intel 2200/2915's should work off the bat.
I had a problem, cuz i set the hard-ware switch "off". But if u get that covered, it should work.
BTW, have you guys used the network-manager applet ? I've installed it, but i dont know how to make it the default network handler.

I have Ubuntu on my 700m and again as you have seen it installs like a dream! As for the resolution you can tweak X or you can wget 855resolution, then gedit the file and put in your screen resolution. Walla...jobs done!

Heres a link to the HOWTO http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=27029

Just change the mode to 5C and the XRESO to 1280 and the YRESO to 800

Unless of course its already sorted and I was a bit late!!

Cheers
