just_blaze, awesome info, thanks alot! Yeah what I meant by the Win XP Pro thing was that if I order the laptop without a HD & Memory, they obviously won't be able to install windows on the laptop. So I was asking if they would just send me the Win XP Pro cd so that I can install it myself once I get my own HD & memory. I forgot to ask, also, was what are some good sites to order a HD/memory for the laptop from?

thecow...that's awesome man...I'm transferring up from SMC (Santa Monica College) as a Bus/Econ major. How are you liking it? A few of my homies go there and f'n love it, ahah! I'm going to be staying in San Rafael; hopefully it's nice. Are you living in IV? Yeah, I'm really excited about the Z70va; I hope I end up choosing it, heh.

Yea I live in IV, in an apartment. San Rafael is decent I guess, its university owned, so youll probably have to deal with an RA or some bullshit. So if you plan on openly being drunk or blazing or something, it can be annoying. When I was in the dorms freshman year it wasnt so bad. The cops have been been getting more and more oppressive since ive been to ucsb. The first year del playa was tight, everyone would walk around with cups in their hands, every place would have a party, youd just walk in, fill up with the keg talk to some people, walk like 10 feet down to the next party. Then last year the cops started arresting people for having cops, and shutting down parties, its getting to be a real problem. Time for revolution I think.

awesome...

Hey a few more questions that sprung to mind. I have the Klipsch ProMedia 5.1 setup, and I was wondering if I would be able to hook this up to the laptop? How is the audio card on this laptop? I also have the Klipsch ProMedia v.2-400 I could hook up if the 5.1 would be a problem? Also, as far as batteries are concerned, what do you guys recommend? Should I get the 2nd battery option, 2 main batteries, or both? Can someone explain to me the differnece from the 2nd battery option and 2 main batteries?

Ahhhh, some more stuff for you guys, lol. Since I'm new to the laptop scene, what other accessories are essential/necessary for me to buy? Like a carrying case, printer, port replicator (btw what is a port replicator?). If you can recommend me a good printer for college shit that would be great. Just something for printing up work/reports and what not. Like, is the HP Deskjet 6540 ok? It's on sale on newegg for $105. Thanks!!

I got my system from Geared2Play also. In my opinion, they've got the best price and best discounts. I've said this back then and still right now. If you price out a system on their site, it just doesnt make sense to buy your components elsewhere... well I did buy an additional stick of RAM at another etailer.

I'm not sure what other resellers do this; however my Z71V from ISTNC came with a notebook case that works just fine. If I was a business exec., I would probably get a better one, but I'm a college student who doesn't really care

One thing I'm very glad i did was buy an extra AC adapter... Some say its a waste, but I say it was quite the time saver. This way you can always have one plugged in at your desk while you have the other one in your case (just for the times when you need to plug in while you're not at your desk). It saved a lot of back ache, because every time I went over to my buddies house to place Counter Strike: Source, I didn't have to crawl under my desk and position myself so I could get to the plug.

so I think I'm going to go ahead and order the HD/memory/OS from newegg.com. For 1gb of memory, there is OCZ for $116, Crucial for $120, and muskin for $129. For an 80gb HD, there's Toshiba for $104, Samsung for $104, Hitachi for $111, Fujitsu for $112, another Hitachi for $118, another Fujitsu for $139, and WD for $114. Which ones do you guys recommend?

I think prices will be going up after reading this thread. I feel really cheap now
post #30 of 47
Dem1k, you can get a gig of Kingston DDR2 memory for $103 at Newegg, which is considerably cheaper than the ones you were quoting.
Personally i would pickup a Seagate 80GB for about $129 and it will prob preform better then all the drives you mentioned with a 5yr warrenty.

I saw the Kingston but I've been reading the boards and people have been saying they've had problems w/ their Kingston memory. Plus, if it's only $20 more for a more respectable brand, I'll do it. Where can I get a Seagate at? They aren't listed on newegg.com

Oh also, I'm planning on buying a bluetooth mouse. The two that struck my eye were the Logitech MX900 and Microsoft M60-00006. Can anybody recommend me one over the otehr?

I'm trying to think if there's anything else to know before I place the order...

Well ladies and gents, it's official: I bought an Asus Z70Va today . I ended up ordering it through geared2play.com. This is how I ordered it:

Pentium M 2.0ghz
WiFi 802.11a/b/g Intel
DVD/RW
Bluetooth
Spare Main Batttery 8cel 4800MAH
Spare AC Adapter
2 Year-Extended (3 Year total) warranty

Total: $1664 + shipping (I might be doing 2 day shipping which I believe is like $66, we'll see.)

I am also most likely going to be ordering a Seagate 80gb 5400rpm HD, Logitech MX900 Bluetooth mouse, and Crucial 1gb DDR2 PC4200 memory (I'll get another 1gb of memory for X-mas or something.) I'm pretty stoked and anxious to get this badboy. Is there anything else that I'm missing???
I believe www.zipzoomfly.com has the seagate notebook hdd's.

The Logitech MX900 also caught my eye i may pick one up myself.

ok guys, I need help..

Eddie from geared2play.com just called me and told me that there is a slight issue. He mentioned that the Z70va doesn't have internal Bluetooth anymore, and that it was (here's the hard part because I could barely understand him) a USB (here's a guess..) downloadable? bluetooth which is the 2.0 version or some shit? I really have no idea what that means. He mentioned it should be about $30-40 cheaper also. Can you please help me out by letting me know what he meant, and what the differences are?

He said if I WANTED to wait, I could cancel the order and wait until Asus releases the model w/ the internal BT, that is, if they ever do.
Dem1k: I believe he said "dongle" instead of downloadable. A dongle is just a little device that sticks out. In this case, probably like a little usb cable/flash drive or something.

here is the exact post from the forum.

The good thing is they are class 2 operation whatever that means and theu are flexible and fairly compact. Asus product manager or someone misquoted / missrepresented the module as z70va internal module. They are infact dongles but they are class 2. So back to the drawing board. Is a good thing most people did not get em. Otherwise i would be in deep septic water.

strossos, thanks alot...

So is this good/bad? What exactly does it mean?
Actually, the "dongle" IS the included Bluetooth. At least, that's how they referred to it... its more or less because its an addition to the Z70 line. It fits alongside the screen, from what I understand. Anyways, I have a Z70Va and it has bluetooth installed, so I don't know why that's happening...

Either way, the MX900 has stopped shipping form Logitech, hasn't it? They're preparing for their new line of mice... and considering I've heard bad things about the MX900 (and considering the Mx1000 is so damn nice), I'm interested in waiting to see if there are any new mice on Logitech's new product line that'll perform up to par with the 1000.
