Laptops with mostly plastic parts is why they still lack in build quality and over time will get all creaky and weak. Metal like as in a Magnesium Alloy/Aluminum like the Apple Powerbooks are built like gold. I would pay more $ for a metal laptop, plus it would only help it run much cooler and who cares if its bit heavier. At least it feels much more solid.

yeah, I do not mind, if you carry mine!

Can't justify it for the extra weight and cost... as long as you get a well built laptop then the fact it is mostly plastic becomes rather irrelevant. It is cheaper and lighter this way. Just my 2 cents.

aren't lots of laptops made of alloys(my S sure is), I don't know shit about metal, but isn't an alloy a metal.

Although it would be cool to have laptops with brushed aluminium casings(such as PowerBooks), I believe that the price would go way up.

It would be pretty cool. If they used aluminum, weight wouldn't be an issue (in fact, it'd probably be slightly lighter depending on the thickness of the aluminum. As for price, it couldn't drive the price up TOO much. Maybe another $100-200.

The Twinhead N15RB is made of Magnesium.....all of it except for the wrist rest is magnesium at least. It definitly feels more solid than plastic.

I hurt myself enough with plastic landing on my foot! If it were made of metal I'd probably break my foot.

A brushed aluminum chassis would definately look good on a laptop. I believe Alienware was going to use one for their AMD Aurora laptop, but they cancelled the project.

Now that I think about it, not only would it look great, but using a custom type heatpipe, you could disipate heat along the entire enclosure. Would help temps a little bit, but on the downside, you couldn't use your laptop's exhaust as a hair dryer anymore.

Lool do you regularly drop your laptop on your foot?

The poll is missing an option:
- Metallic (magnesium, aluminium, titanium) notebooks are too expensive, I can live with higher-grade plastic.

Alloy means a mix of materials, of which at least one is a metal. Can be just metals or metals + plastic, metals + carbon.
Alloys are usually prefered to crude metals for their unique combination of properties.

You can make a sturdy laptop with the right design using high grade plastic or a combo of magnesium and plastics (the iBook for example). One made from a solid metal casing might be a bit tricky. (sounds like the entire case would be one large heat sink)

Not regularly, but have done it a couple times. A 9200 landing on its corner on the top of your foot hurts!

If the whole laptop was solidly put together, I really have no problem with what it's made of.

Practically every MSI system is constructed in large part from an Aluminum Alloy. As was mentioned above, the same can be said for the N15RB and other products in the Twinhead line of semi-ruggedized laptops.

my A51m 766 is built real solid ... =P

If a laptop was made of metal wouldn't it be more prone to static electric shocks? Which would fry just about anything on a computer?

just wondering
