Manually Replacing PSU?

post #1 of 4

So I just got back to college, and finally got my laptop after two weeks without it. Used it for ten minutes, then the screen went black and the entire computer is dead. Not even any LED lights. The AC adaptor appears to be working fine.

I'm guessing that the PSU must be dead, right?

My warrenty ran out last month so I either have to send it back to Sager or replace the part myself... Has anyone done this before? Where would I go about ordering a PSU?

Here's to hoping the rest of the laptop didn't get fried in the process...

That is exactly what happened to my unit. Except that it occurred 3 days after I received it (bought it July 2005). It turns out that the mainboard needed to be replaced. If the LED indicator in the AC adaptor is lit when plugged in then it is safe to assume the adaptor is OK and the mainboard power delivery and regulation circuitry failed. I would still place a multimeter (DC Volts) on the ouput of the AC adaptor just to be sure the flaw is on not on the power brick.

Best regards;

I don't know if this is related, but the "plug" that the adapter fits into actually came off my motherboard. I was able to solder it back on, and it works fine now. MAYBE one of the connections came off of your mainboard. If your warranty has run out, then I'd say why not take it apart and see. Just so you know, it's tricky getting this thing apart. You might want to make a "map" of where all the screws went as you take it apart. Hope you can get your money back. Good luck.
