hologram's Quanta MW1

I just got my Quanta MW1 from PowerNotebooks.com! I'll post a short review now but ask questions and I'll try to answer them.

Build quality is okay. The chassis is plastic, the screen creaks a little but I don't have to hold the base when I open it. The screen has something that I'm not sure you would call "sparkles". When it's showing solid colors you can see the surface of the screen (it's not perfectly transparent). I can also see this on my old laptop so I'm not sure whether it's in all matte LCDs. If I push against the back of the LCD I can only see distortions on the screen, but only when I push near the sides near the top. The keyboard and touchpad feel solid. The resolution is just right for me. The notebook makes barely any noise at all.

When looking at the NVIDIA control panel right now it says the GPU core temperature is 93 degrees celcius and the ambient temperature is 72 degrees celcius. Surely this is too high? But the notebook feels barely warm and the fan isn't on.

Wait, now the fan just turned on and the GPU core temperature is 70 and the ambient is 59. Hmm...

I'll try to find out the battery life soon.

Edit: when the battery is at 100%, with wireless off, powermizer set at max battery, and brightness at minimum (which is still bright enough), Windows says I have 2:26 remaining, which seems low. Also in the NVIDIA control panel the core slowdown threshold says 105 degrees celcius, should I decrease this?

Edit 2: After setting powermizer to max battery, the temperature seems to be more normal, 60 GPU / 50 ambient, and the fan turns on sooner.

Edit 3: The battery went from 100% to 10% in 2:47, with light use.

Congrats!

Any pictures? benchmarks?

Could we have some pictures...
Also, what is your opinion on the weight?

My 3DMark05 score is 2624! This is with default settings and drivers, on ac power, not overclocked. I'm not sure why it's so high, but it's great! Although the notebook is very quiet when the fan's not on, it can get somewhat loud when it's on. No pictures, sorry, since I don't have a digital camera. The weight is reasonable, can't measure it accurately but I think it's around what Sabio and PowerNotebooks say, about 6 lbs. The keyboard and palm rest can get warm, so it might be uncomfortable for typing for long periods of time.

Could you compare build quality - with say dell or IBM. That would give the rest of us a good idea.
And I see that you are also having heat issues - I suppose u did get Arctic Silver 5.
I remember that the Quanta KN1 had heat issues, which were later resolved by an updated BIOS.
could this be the same thing???

If you use a mouse and you're right handed, does it make your hand hot?

Nope. There is a fan at the back right but you would have to hold your mouse very close to the laptop and near the back to feel any heat.

I don't have much to compare the build quality to, it's better than my old Dell laptop but I suspect most notebooks would be. In my opinion it looks nice. The screen creaks but it doesn't bother me too much. Another thing is that there are 4 USB ports, one pair on the left and one pair on the right. But if I plug my thumb drive into one of them it blocks the one next to it. And if the laptop is plugged in I can't put my thumb drive in either USB port next to the power, which is on the left. So I have to plug in my thumb drive on the right and my mouse on the left.

The temperature seems to be lower now (inside the laptop at least). The GPU is around 55-60 C, the CPU is around 45-50 C, and the hard drive is around 45 C. Can anyone tell me if this is still too hot?

Wow impressive. I definately should have waited for the widescreen version. I'm not sure about the GPU or the HD temp, but the CPU temp is right. 45-50 is normal.

Do you know what clock speeds the 6600 is at?
It's at 375 and 700

Damn.... thats pretty sweet. My z71v 6600go pales in comparison

Yeah, the 6600 in the Asus Z71V comes underclocked.. it's already slower than the normal 6600 right out of the box.

Hi, I have this notebook too (bought it yesterday).
Q for hologram: does your fan goes on every 5-6 minutes?
prepaired MW1 preview, post or not?
martynas, my fan goes on at full speed frequently as well. Bhead sent me a PM a couple weeks ago with the same comment:

I just got my MW1 from powernotebooks.com, and the fan comes on full blast every 75-90 seconds for about a minute.
And certainly post your review.

Yes, temps does change too - for example after setting 800MHz to 0.716V cpu temperature dropped by 8C.
However fan still turns on (only the intervals of silence are longer) - thats because of gpu (I do not understand why nVidia can't make automatic voltage and mhz corrections like ati... or they are made and I just don't know about them?)
I asked support about this (fan and heat) issue, they replied, that this is performance notebook, so it is normal.

Nice review. By the way, the bios update is at http://sabioproducts.com/service_system.php?id=9 . I have Arctic Silver and I undervolted, and I updated the bios, and the fan still comes on every 5 minutes. It goes for about 1.5 minutes each time until it stops. I'm kind of used to the noise now.

Wow, I didn't know about the light sensor until now. Although, is there a way to toggle it off?

If you guys that bought this laptop ordered windows, can you try putting the windows cd in the drive? I have the DVD-RW and it can't read that one CD, but it can read everything else. Other computers can read my windows cd. So I burned a copy of it using another computer, and my laptop can read the copy. Weird, huh?

press fn+F4 or fn+F5 - if brightness does not change - light sensor is on and screen brightness is adjusted automaticaly, to turn it off press fn+home again...
