Adding a 2nd Hard drive

Hello!
Well, I just got my 8890 this weekend. Here are the specs:

P4 3.2
1 Gig Ram
60GB 7200 Hard drive
ATI 9600 128Mb Video
DVD -R/RW CDRW combo
removable MP3 player
TV tuner
Raid Capable

My question is, I purchased a second 7200 60 gig from another supplier (alot cheaper).
I took out the 2nd modular bay to put the drive in, and it looks like it will go in, but there are no connectors.... Is this normal? or is this there way of making me purchase a drive bay holder?

I believe I am missing the conector that goes from the Hard drive to the back of the bracket. Some sort of ribbon cable with a small circuit board.

Should I be putting the drive in a different location????

Help!!!!!
P.S. can a second drive go where the MP3 player is?

Thanks

I guess you could say this is a way of making you buy the adaptor. The standard bay cover does not have the connections. You need to buy the bracket for the HD. If its a 2.5" drive, it will fit. You will also need to set the jumpers for the second drive. The bradket is something like $35 or so. Its still a deal.

As far as I know, there's no bracket available for the MP3 slot at this time. I believe it would have to be a special item. I don't think any standard drives would fit in that opening, maybe one of the new 1.8" ones.

secondary hd drive bracket

DarphBobo,

Marquisdarguis is right!

I ordered mine right from the start and it must have cost me about 35 bucks. This will get you:

1. An extra case/bracket. Exactly the same that you already have, but with a connector build into it.

2. An interface connector to fit between your drive and the case.

3. Two mounting strips and a set of screws to hold the drive in the bracket.

4. A jumper, check your manual (p6-7) on how to set it.

Assembling it is easy, and it works well.

Good luck!

Just take a peak in my .sig for "Adding a second drive" - it explains and shows you what's happening.

YES, you will need to order the "Bracket" - as it has the IC board to bridge the HD with the laptop.

Hi I just purchased a bracket for my 8890 and the connector pins do not line up correctly? When I connect the ribbon to the hard drive (which I removed from my old lappy) the connector doesn't line up with the bracket in two ways. First the angle of the ribbon (which isn't straight) is angle the wrong way after being connected to my hard drive (and no, I don't have my hard drive upside down as the hard drive will only fit in the bracket one way) and two the connector row with the slot for a single pin is on the wrong side. Help, me. If this is unclear I can post some pics of my situation.

Thanks,
Ronnie

Drives in Bracket But

First I'm a big ol dummy, got the ribbon connected to the drive and the bracket, and please don't ask how I would like to save mysef from some embarassment. But now I've run into another little issue which I am sure I'm causing myself. I've inserted the drive into the bay but when booting up it's telling me no ultra... and then no OS installed. I've tried all the jumper settings but no go. Again any help would be nice.

Thanks again for helping a hopeless soul,
Ronnie

Well, if you've tried all the jumper settings (set to CS - or cable select; or SLAVE) then the only thing I can think of is: is there something in the BIOS you need to set. On my 8887 there wasn't, but it may be different for your model.

Seeing how the second media bay (closest to the hinges of the LCD) is considered SLAVE on IDE2 (which I never liked) the added drive cannot be set as master.

(The TV Tuner slot is the slave for IDE1 - which is where the second HD should go for best performance, since the master for IDE1 is the main HD).

Anyway, re-double-check the jumper settings, make sure the drive is oriented the correct way when reading which pins to short (jumper) - i.e. make sure it's not upside down and you tried the wrong pins. Then check the BIOS for any options (and see if you can see your added HD in the bios menu).

Was there something already on this disk before, or is it blank/new?

Ronnie, I have been following your disk issues. May I suggest you thoroughly read my review here. It covers most of the aspects of setting up the 8890. I know the thread rambles a bit in places but stick with it you should find most of what you are looking for there.
