I would say it probably runs at least from 8am until 10pm every day longer on the weekends. I still love it and I am quite happy...

I am however considering upgrading to an ATI 9700, anybody here have any thoughts on that? I am curious if it is worth the money...I really only play CoH, I have halo and FarCry, so if you throw FPS numbers at me if you can make it from those games. the benchmarks from 3d mark don't really help me.
my CD writer didnt write ether, even though it simulates that it did. That means the drive is defective or something - after going through every one of tech support's solutions to no avail, they just sent me a replacement drive and it works like a charm. so if you are still under warranty see if you can get a replacement. i got mine sometime over the summer.

about the videocard, your only bet is e-bay if you are lucky. i havnt found any after casually looking. I posted up sites where you could buy the videocard, but they are all SOLD OUT (my guess permanently)

anyways, i believe that Alienware is pretty much done with the 5500.
I'm definitely going with a cheaper desktop in the future!!

My crappy 766 can BARELY play Day of Defeat Source even with the LOWEST settings on!!! Whats the deal? I want a new PC, and it'll definitely not be a gaming laptop.

FPS is horrendous even with an overclocked nVidia go 5600. I get hit with 4 shots even though I see only one in-game. Its not the internet connection, its the 10FPS I get on this chitty craptop. I seriously cant wait till i get a new desktop. Then this lappy will just be a $3000 jukebox and picture viewer.
A 5600go? What did you expect?

I agree somewhat. I'm pretty pissed because since I bought it with a 9700m .. I never got an upgrade. If they had released a 9800m it would have been great ... but I got shafted. Overall though I think it is still a good computer .. but I probably should have bought a nice thin laptop and built a powerhouse PC because without even a single video upgrade the final word is I got robbed, and I'll never buy another Alienware PC again. (Alienware is 100times better than a dell though without a doubt =X)

monsoon: are you overclocking?
you can play at 21-31 fps? My old DIY desktop i gave to my parents got about that, and man... it was hell just to watch it!

No overclocking, normal speeds 450 core, 250 mem. Its plays smooth. It will prob. be higher FPS with AA and AF turned down.
Monsoon, how can you play with 21-31 FPS? The game may look pretty, but whats the use if it runs like molasses out during an Alaskan dawn.

I'm no complaining about the appearance; HL2 looks wonderful on my lappy, but it runs like $hit when theres intense action. I definitely need to crank down the settings, cause I cant settle for anything under 35fps.

I know, its old. I cant even upgrade it!!! Thats why I bought the damn thing. And now its allegedly "no longer supported" by Alienware. I overclock the heck out of the video card so DoD:S and CS:S can be tolerable.

I agree, for $3000 I could have gotten a very nice desktop and a thin and light. Someone here on the forums SOLD his 766 to do so. I'm definitely getting a nice desktop, cause at least I know I can upgrade the video cards on those. This lappy is still good for LAN parties, but I cant wait until I get a new desktop whenever that would be.

P.S. Ironically, I bought my lappy at the time because I was anticipating the supposed release of HL2 when it was announced. then valve delayed the game a few years, and now its out and my hardware is already obsolete!

With AA and AF turned off Fps goes from 35 to 60. good enough to play I guess. Ill have to put in my Go5700 hand see what that does.

Morrowind Oblivion...

Elder Scrolls VI: Oblivion, Any ideas if this will run on a 766? Will it be Playable?
I play Hl2 at 1680x1050 with most settings high except for shadows and models at medium. At a few of the later levels you get some slow downs with all the different particle effects .. bt at somepoint I usually turn down settings ... becuase earlier in the game you don't run into that stuff at all.

Honestly if you haven't played HL2 though you need to ... whether or not you like the premise and story of the game it is the tightest, BEST MADE game ever to come out ... basically the best at everything it does, whether or not you like all the gameplay mechanics and story points ... execution is perfect.

It's probably the best way to describe why so many people love it and why some are disappointed.

Yeah right. Maybe at low settings .. if morrowind was any hint those guys aren't very good programmers ... (or had a low budget). Either way expect not to be able to run it at highest settings .. because the 766 is top of the line before the biggest leap in GPU power ever.

I got a 766 with 1GB of ram next to my laptop that plays oblivion just fine it's not on high setting but the game put it in medium settings it will run fine on those settings but you can tweak the video settings slightly to get better frame rates without taking from the game. Yes you can play it

very nice, i have same 1 as you except mine is 3.0ghz and silver, no problems here atm and had mine for over 2 years

I don't do much on it these days though, and keep it cool all the time

766 2 years later

Mine is almost 3 years old, and I'm still very happy with it! There is zero wear on the paint. I've replaced my hard drive under extended warranty, twice, including the day I got it (DOA drive). That was frustrating, due to having to reinstall all the software.

The WiFi card didn't work till they got the Atheros drivers about 3 months after I bought it.

Since then, though it's worked great, even when the hard drive failed I was able to get all my important data off pretty easily and rebuild the drivers much easier than in the past. M$ has drivers for a lot of this stuff that they didn't 2 years ago.

It's a 3.2ghz, 1g mem, 60 gb hard drive, and 16.1" screen and ATI 9600 in Cyborg Green.

Plays every game I've thrown at it.

It's good to hear you guys report your good news about your AW. Seems like a lot of people forget about posting the good stuff and just report the bad news.

I have a saucy silver AW-5500 (766) and it has been great. Had a DvD writer and gfx card problem....they took care of the problems quickly and easily while it was under warranty. The reps were always friendly to me. Haven't had any problems besides that. The palm rests show slight wear...maybe I'll get it painted someday by Smooth.

Well I got mine 3/15/2004 and its still working great! I was able to upgrade to the 5700go at the time, I have both cards. I still has about 9 months left on the warranty. The paint is 99% perfect, one small scratch right above the PCMCIA slot. It still shines and the Alienhead led lights still work.
