The reality is a twelve year old kid could not only have the same programming skill as you they could make you look like a n00b. That's why companies continue to plan to layoff IT people in the upcoming fiscal quarters. They are thinking why in the hell should I pay this person $xxx, xxx or even $xx,xxx when I can pay some person in India x,xxx to do the same exact quality work (in theory).

Even though I don't agree with off-short contracting and it's affected many of my friends, I feel this IT ego that you suffer from where you think you know everything and aren't willing to share and grow and think of money first and foremost are one factor that is making these companies lose faith and abandon hope in us.

Going back to one of my previous posts, with such a mentality as yours I don't even know why you post on this forum. Under your opinions I should be paying to even talk with you! Do you accept paypal?
Your personal attacks will not deter me. I did not personally attack you as you are to me. I came into this conversation because I wanted to have a logical conversation. I am gentleman enough to take your criticisms. So I guess we agree to disagree, and I submit to your personal attacks as this conversional thread has went south because of it.

It's not a personal attack. It's the truth as I see it. I don't need to deter you. You've already detered yourself. You can never realize your full potential because sharing code goes against what you stand for. So not only would you be unwilling to help some young programmer for free who is starting out, but you could miss out on an exponential breakthrough that he may discover and be willing to share with you.

The fact remains. In 6 months, a year, 3 years, sometime; you could very well lose your job because some motivated individual in India can not only do it better and cheaper, but they are willing to learn and share.

Fair enough. Perhaps what I said about piracy raising the price of games was simplistic. I agree with what you had to say about it but I also believe that piracy is a component of the price as well. Anyway, element, I think you have some good points, though I don't share your total belief in open source code and the good nature of human beings, I am willing to concede that there are advantages to be gained from it. That said, my whole argument was against piracy not open source code, with you saying that you don't agree with it, I have nothing left to argue about, but thanks for a very interesting intellectual debate on a day when I have very little to do at work.

Glad I didn't go into programming...people will always need my geeky ass behind a keyboard. It would be too much aggrevation to have a systems administrator living half way around the world from his servers....hopefully

Wow,

I've got a wet spot for this game.

First rule for Doom newbies: Play with headphones ON and the lights OUT!

Second rule for Doom newbies: Have clean underwear at arms length.

Sorry to rant on boys, just my two cents on this issue.

I guess we all have different opinions on this....but honestly I do not care. Fine me a thousand dollars and watch me like a hawk and I will stop, but no words will back me away from anything. </rant>

Craig, why play with headphones? Is there an advantage.

Also I would just like to point out two things with piracy and pricing.

1. The music industry has brought CD prices down drastically since this issue has come about.

2. My first job, as a 15 year old, was bagging groceries and gathering carts for Fred Meyer Grocery. When a customer decided not to purchase something at checkout that might spoil, such as milk, eggs, etc. the cashier would usually let it stay at their register for hours, (until they were off, or lunch/cig break). Usually they would just throw the items away with little care. I would always try to take the items back and put them where they belonged given the oppertunity, but one day my boss pulled me aside and told me to stop doing that, those items were written off as stolen goods. I do not think this is a practice only used by Fred Meyer Grocery, which is actually a huge corporation that owns many grocery stores across the US (Kroger). Also posted in the store are warnings that theft leads to hire prices for all consumers. Therefore, when you read industry statistics on stolen goods, or you see warnings like this in the store, remember a huge contributing factor towards this problem is poor management and employee laziness. I cannot imagine what other types of incidents are contributed to theft.... I believe this indirectly ties into the piracy-software ordeal. It problems gets a worse wrap than it actually deserves, I honestly believe there may be more good than bad that arises from it in the future.

++++ I must admit I do not download music, movies, or software from the internet other than software that is meant to be demo'd.

Headphones are deff the way to go.. I use my med sized ear puff sony headphones when I play on my laptop if in not hooked up to my reciver. It just emerses you in the game. Doom 3 will def be a head phone type of game!

headphone over surround sound speaker system? explain to me how it sounds better. the reason it is appealing to me right now is because i am in an apartment complex.
Headphones give you a better sense of immersion in the game...due to the isolation they give. You will always hear outside things going on in your apartment with speakers. Such as cars driving by, neighbors hUmping, ect. and everyone knows, Pink dogs don't do the Horizontal Hoki Poki.

lol, well i am on the bottom floor, and the girls above me are on the college basketball team, they are about 9 feet tall each, so they dont exactly have men waiting at their door. however, when they walk around they sound like ogres, and its scary to think they are females. but i still see what you are saying, if i can find some surround sound heaphones i think i am going to do that for the meantime.

They pay people a lot of money to browse forums like these and get info on who has what... then they track you by IP address, then next thing you know, you have the feds at your door with a warrant and you get arrested for Piracy... and thats a nice big fine that you will be paying off for the rest of your life... not to mention jail time... happened to a friend of mine... only he was ripping off a bank... lol.
