6-cell and 9-cell same battery life?

I jus wanted to ask if this is also happening to anyone else? The 6-cell(53WH) battery that came with my Dell Inspiron 9300 when I ordered it seems to have a battery life of 2 hours and 46 minutes according to Battery Monitor.NET v0.7. Then I stuck in the 9-cell(80WH) battery I bought off eBay and I've gotten the same battery life of 2 hours and 46 minutes. I didn't change any settings(didn't overclock or anything). So if anyone could help me resolve this problem, I'd appreciate it.

This might help.

Try draining 9-cell battery all the way to 0% then turn off the laptop and let it recharge overnight (at least 12 hrs.).

Okay, thanks. I'll give it a try and reply back with how it goes.

I was trying to drain my 9-Cell too, ended forever on... Sometime i wish it could drain more faster by playing games and movies so i can recharge it and ready for the next day use.

mmzmaster,

There is no need to drain Li-Ion battery all the way down to be able to recharge it again. They don't suffer from 'memory effect' like Ni-Cd or Ni-Mh batteries, but they do have shorter life-cycle (about 900 recharges before loosing capacity).

Also, every time You start using fresh-new battery (and not only in laptop) You have to charge it much longer then usually (time reported in manual) so that the recharging circuit can be callibrated for showing the capacity meter, and proper time for engaging/dissengaging recharger.

P.S. Good way to do the battery drain might be runing some nVidia gfx-card demo loop, with some mp3 playing in background (and with power-saving disabled).

I was about to say that. They actually benefit from more shallow discharge cycles, and they lose life the more you use them.

Technically speaking, your placing your Li-Ion battery through more use/charge cycles then someone who doesn't discharge their batteries. As others have written, lithium batteries do NOT have a memory effect. There is no benefit in haveing your battery completly discharged. Infact, it is detrimental to the charging capacity of the battery.

Okay, I've depleted the battery to 0% and recharged it again. But its weird how it still displays 2 hours and 46 minutes with the power adapter plugged. But when I just run it on batteries, the battery monitor says I have about 3 hours and 5 minutes.

the only way to tell is to do a self test. play a long dvd or a game and time it, its the only true way to know. you will see the difference.

In my manual for my iBook, it told me to charge it fully, let it run out and charge it fully again. Cycle the battery. I am still unsure if that should be done with my i9300 or not.
