Here comes my short review on the Dell X1. You have to excuse my bad english, but I will do my best. Pictures will come later this week.
Dell X1:
12.1" WXGA (1280*768)
Intel Pentium M 733 (1.1 ghz 400 mhz, 2mb L2 cache)
512 mb ram (256 mb on board + 256 mb DDR2 400 mhz)
60 gb hdd 4200 rpm
Intel® 915GMS-chipset 128 mb shared vram
External Dvd/Cd-Combo Drive
Bluetooth
Intel Pro Wireless 2200 802.11b/g
Secure Digital- card *1
Compact Flash- card *1
Firewire *1
Usb 2.0 *2
Primary 3 cell battery (27 watt)
Weight: 1.12 kg
Windows XP Pro
3 year warranty (next business day on site)
First Impressions:
- Love
- Very small and light
- Very good looking design
- Dead Silent
- Warm
The Screen:
It´s a 12.1" WXGA screen (not the glossy one). It´s very sharp and reflects the coulors very good. The resulotion is 1280*768 and it´s very smooth to work with. I´m very satisfied, the only con is that it´s not glossy
Keyboard:
Very nice with no flex at all. It will take some time getting use to it though b/c it´s so small.
Touchpad:
It´s small, but not too small. I had to change the settings b/c it was´nt the best feeling in the beginning. But now it´s great.
Harddrive:
The only con is that it´s 4200 rpm, but that´s not a problem to me. I think the computer is fast enough for daily tasks. In the future I hope they make 1.8" harddrives with faster rpm, so that I could exchange the hardrive to a faster one.
Intel Pro Wireless 2200 802.11b/g:
I have not tested the wlan yet, but I will next week and then I will uppdate this review.
Optical Drive:
The computer comes with an external drive to keep the weight down. That´s perfect for me b/c I don´t use the DVD/CD so much. Only when I install some software like Norton Anti Virus.
Sound:
The computer has only 1 speaker like most of the ultraportables. The sound is pretty loud and clear and sounds like any other computer. There´s no bass though. With headphones the computer is perfect to watch a movie on the train or plain etc.
Heat and Noise:
What Noise? The computer has no fan, so it´s dead silent. The lack of fan makes the computer a little warm though after some using. But it´s only warm under the computer and it´s not disturbing warm. I love that it´s so silent.
Battery life with 3 cell battery:
It depends on what you are doing, but between 2-3h. One thing that I notice was that the battery feels a little loose. Not so it´s disturbing or that it could fall of, but it´s a little loose. It also has Dells expresscharge which means that the battery will load on a very short time.
Delivery Time:
I ordered the computer on Monday 5/9 and it was arriving yesterday 8/9. That´s fast
Pros:
- It´s very light
- Good screen
- Nice keyboard with no flex
- Dead Silent
- Battery
- 3 years warranty
- No disturbing pre-loaded software
- Windows XP Pro CD
- Recovery CD
- Expresscharge
Cons:
- A little warm after some using
- No glossy screen
- Small touchpad
- Only 2 usb ports
- Little loose battery
Conclusion:
This is my third laptop, but my first ultraportabel. I´m very satisfied so far, I love the size and the weight. I recommend this computer to students, business people and just any guy that don´t gonna play any games.
