Hey guys I am new to these forums, but I am currently in search of getting a new system.

I am primarily looking for a laptop, and from all the Hype that Alienware receives I was quite intrigued to see what they had to offer. Now I've read multiple reviews on various systems that Alienware has to offer. I have read more bad reviews than good ones and thats why I've come here.

I need a system to handle my cad apps as well as my programming apps. Now I also do a bit of gaming on the side, but its nothing really all that heavy, but I do enjoy playing Battlefield2. I find that a very enjoyable game.

I am also in the market of getting a new desktop, I have looked around on the Alienware website and I saw the ALX systems. But I also went on to the Dell site and I saw the XPS systems. I have already posted this in the Dell forum specifically asking about the xps systems, so I don't need to know about them.

Cost doesn't matter at this point, I will pay just about anything to get a really nice system, desktop and laptop both.

N e way any and all help would be appreciated thanks a bunch!!!

Welcome to the forums, glad to have you here.

Before I got my AW laptop, I had read many bad reviews at several websites. I realize now after owning one and these forums that a lot of those sites are just full of shi&. Anyone cast post there...from dumba$$ computer newbs, who screw up their own system and blame it on AW to people who just wanna flame AW because they can't afford one. From my experience AW has been great.

As for laptops for you. The only AW you should consider is the 7700 since you will be wanting a gaming machine. This is a desktop replacement, so its pretty fast. However, it may be heavier and bigger than what your wanting. I suggest if you have time to wait...AW is supposed to come out with a new middleweight model this holiday season, which I'm sure will be both fast and lighter.

As for ALX...they are awesome gaming machines...but you should talk to DarthBeavis (who I'm sure you'll meet on here very soon) or one of the other ALX owners for specifics.

thanks onaplain. DId you get your name from Nirvana the band?

the 7700 is an awesome machine for BF2 although I'd say you should get 2gb of ram.

Oh, yeah I had orginally planned to get the maximum number of ram as well. I would like to see at minimum of 2 gb on a system, but I want the max of 4. Does the 7700 support 4 gbs of ram?

If you order an ALX, make sure you get the upgraded PSU. The ALX is sweet if you can afford it. Look at the threads I have started in the AW desktop forum to see the mods to my rig.

Darth, Yeah I've been searching through the forum, and I must say wow, looks like you've done your homework on the alx. Yeah I want to get max everything on the alx. I think I am going to get a 7700, alx, and maybe another desktop as well. Might as well, if I the cash I suppose.

Oh here is a question is SLI even worth it. From what i hear it has a slight performance increase, but nothing too major.

I do plan on getting it anyway, because 7800's sound amazing.

SLI is worth is and the real life results prove it. My frame rates improve dramatically in gaming such as Battlefield 2. Infact I need to have SLI on to play BF2 smoothly with all settings maxed. Keep in mind that is with dual 6800 ultras. With dual 7800 GTXs you will be in great shape. I would wait on teh laptop a bit tho as they have a new one that will be released in teh next few months.

hmmm okay, well this something I sort of need to fill in soon maybe. I think I can deal with a sentia or something smaller and then pick up this new "7700" or something later. Either or it doesn't matter I have the money to spend towards these systems and I am willing to put down on them.

I had orginally thought of getting 2 alx's But I wasn't sure if that would be the best course of action. What would be the best configuration on an ALX. I already know I want the 7800gtx...

DB actually giving advice to hold off! i am impressed I am used to "you will wait forever for the next thing around the corner Sperminator."

Though I agree to wait. The next lappy's are going to be fx-57/ dual core 4800 compatible. I need a lappy and want one with a go 7800 whenever they come out.

The biggest difference between Alienware and Dell is hardware.

AW uses fully functional retail motherboards, cpu's, and high quality memory that are not available at Dell. With the programs you say you'll be running, you'll be wanting a P4 processor instead of an M processor that's in the XPS2.

You should also check out the 7500 at AW, it packs a lot of punch, and is less expensive than the fully blown ALX line.

It would be nice to have a matching set of a new 7700 and ALX though...

awesome, good good. I've decided that I am going to get 2 alx's and then I will wait a bit till that mid ranged laptop comes out, In the mean-time though I am picking up a Sentia. I am also going to build a desktop as well. I was trying to decide whether I want to get the sli lan party board, or the Abit Fatality board. Now I know SLI is going to be good. But I will have two systems with SLI already, being that I will be getting the ALX's. who knows. But I am going to trick it out...err rice it out? You the lights and whatever. I am defintely going the water cooled route...though I've been contemplating using a freezer and turning it into a self contained cooling mechanism...as opposed to water. Water is good, but I am thinking even colder. Maybe have dry ice, and it as creating effects and whatever with the system... I don't know as of yet..But I was entertaining the idea.

Malikide,

You are the commish right? If not...than...maybe a reality check is in order? Two ALXs, a mid range + a DIY?

Oh yeah, that rates a "Killin' Me",

Welcome! I have the 7700 and I love it. If I were to buy a desktop, it would definitely be an AW. Superior firepower.

If you are going to run CAD apps you may want to consider the MJ-12m with the Quadro card. Some gaming video cards have problems with this type of apps.

You can also run games on a Quadro but it's not going to offer the exact same performance of a gaming card but you'll be hard pressed to notice the difference.

If you are going to run Maya you'll have problems with the NVIDIA gaming cards, most CAD applications can run fine on an ATI based card but you may want to contact the program manufacturer to check compatibility.

Hope this helps.
