"...the following file is missing or corrupt:\windows\system32\config\system"

Ok, so I finally made it through the system restore, it took all 3 recovery disks, then rebooted itself, then it pops up:
""Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:\windows\system32\config\system

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.""

BUT, the recovery CD'S aren't really setup disks, so it will just go back into trying to delete and reformat my notebook. I hold down 'R' and nothing happens. I tap F8, and it won't allow me to start up in another mode, it will reboot and say the same thing.

I went to the microsoft support site, and all their solutions require recovery console, which i cant get to, because the pc wont start, and i dont know how toget it any other way. They say this error comes up though, because of a missing registry file. How do i repair it, if i cant get to the welcome screen? It just gets to 'Toshiba' then a black screen with white bars all the way across then the error message.

Any help would be appreciated.

Toshiba Satellite 5202-S505; 60GB HDD, running Windows XP Home.

I just tried to call the bastards at windows, they direct me to Toshiba, since it's OEM. I know toshiba will brush me off, or make me pay. I did a sys rec. that kept freezing and giving erros, well it finally completed after a few tries,. I took out the 3rd recovery disk and it restarted, and gave me this error. i've been all over google, and every solution require you to boot from an installation cd, which I don't have, and go into recovery console.

Is there a way to get to recovery console, without an installation cd?

Probably the installation failed. There are kept the system files wich win uses for boot up. It could be also a HDD problem - a bad sector exactly where that file is stored.
I had problems after installing Xp when the onboard ram burned out. The installation went fine but after the restart everithing cashed.
My suggestion (not a legal one) : get a pirate insatllation win and try that one!
