the future of keyboards

i saw a brief article on this in popular mechanics, Googled it and found the site. this is just the coolest keyboard i've ever seen and i even think it might be the future of keyboarding if the price can be sub-50$ (but even thats a little pricey for a keyboard). check it out for yourself: http://www.artlebedev.com/portfolio/optimus/

the only issue i have with this is the mini screens on each key, they seem like they might be power-hungry and might not be able to run off the usb port's 5v (which is bad because i dont want to plug my keyboard into the wall..). i would rather see the screens be replaced with color e-ink displays (not mass-produced yet). those would be perfect for this application because of the low-power needed to operate them and the fact that they only use power when the image has to be changed (no power needed to sustain the image), and the image will only need to be changed on this keyboard when you switch an application. not to mention that the resolution will be better and it will look like a regular keyboard because e-ink screens look more like a sticker or printed paper that a LCD screen. read more about e-ink here: http://www.eink.com/

I don't see how having leds on keys is all that useful. When was the last time you looked at your keys?

did you even look at the site? if so do you understand the pictures? and btw i look at my keys all the time, and so does everyone else unless you know everything by heart. and the benefits to having a mini screen on your keys is that you can custom the look of you keyboard, use one keyboard for many difference languages, and most importantly (for programs and games) change the keys so that they display the functions that they can preform. there is a great example on the site about it being used with photoshop. and for games instead of having to remember the x=flashlight, f=use, and etc the keyboard can just SAY the function right on the key, like "Zoom" "change weapon" and so on. there is a great benefit to having a keyboard that can do this.

I think this kind of thing makes people even stupider and less likely to want to learn than they already are.

If they replaced the LCD's with OLED's that'd be the best!

Pretty cool keyboard. I don't see it coming out next year though. I also bet it will be quite pricey. More than $50 for sure. It is a very creative idea though. Kudos for them coming up with something like that. It could definitely eventually be the future of keyboarding.
