I Have Narrowed My Search Down To My Final 2!

So the laptop I am looking to purchase is for travel and taking around with me, I already have another laptop so I am not looking for a monster. Just a relatively cheap, good computer. After looking around and goign to see the computers at stores with my own eyes I have narrowed it down to the:

- Averatec AV3270-EH1:
Mobile Sempron 2800+, 512MB, 80GB, DVD±RW, Windows XP, 12.1" TFT. I have heard a lot of things about Averatecs not being quality machines, but saw this laptop with my own eyes and the styling of it was amazingly cool. It weighs only 4.5lbs and is very sleek, although I have heard the battery life is horrible, but I was impressed by the fact they have a 24/7 service line (hopefully not foreshadowing anything).
Price: $771.95 (refurbished, shipping not included in price)

- Acer Aspire 5002Wlmi
AMD Turion 64, 1.60GHz, 512MB, 80GB, DVD±RW, Windows XP Professional, 15.4" TFT. Already owning an Acer there is not a computer I would no buy from them, their service, and
laptops have totally won me over. This laptop is not the most amazingly stylish laptop, but it seems solid. Weighing in at around 6.2lbs this laptop is heavier then the Averatec, but not nearly as heavy as many computers on the market.
Price: $825 (slightly used with no problems, shipping included in price)

If any of you have recomendations on either laptop, or if you know pros or cons of either machine let me know. Thanks.

Why not?

I have that mentality where I am like "for a 100 more dollars" I can get a 64 bit Turion instead of an Intel, plus 20 more gigs of hard drive. And it always ends up that my Dell I make is more expensive then a computer with those specs. Plus I prefer AMD processors.

Out of your two options, take the Acer, but take a look at a Dell first.

AVOID THE AVERATEC AT ALL COST !!!

Trust me i own an averatec right now , and it is the worst thing ever , i was also looking for a cheap notebook , it was a transition laptop , was not planning to keep it for a long time , and anyway i wasnt able to , since it broke

First of all , i have a Averatec 6120 . last year model i think ..

The styling of the notebook like you said is pretty fine , i have a widescreen , the colors are great , the screen is really thin , good looking . things that you cant see are these :

Heat : ive actually burned myself once , my laptop run between 70-90 Celcius , actually the stickers under the laptop melted hehe .

Hardware , well the laptop is made of cheap hardware , the HD is slow , the DVD/RW isnt really good , something its gonna take a few try before it actually read the disc , burning is also slow .

Right now my Cpu seems to be at the end , my computer is running slow , the HD is making weird noise , ive opened the laptop *shh dont tell averatec , im trying to have it repair right now and i took a look at how it was build , well its not good , the colling system is really not working for this laptop , it generates too much heat , and the way the laptop is made , it cannot handle that .

So if you still looking to buy this laptop , you better take an extended warranty cause i had mine for 7 months and now its almost toasted , ohh and buy the way , i dont know about the one you wanna buy , but most of averatec laptop are used as Media Center , so they dont have any Dedicated video card , my laptop use shared memory , so forget about games or anything that requires a 3d graphic card !

if you go that way , well i really wish you good luck !

...you get what you paid for ... youll understand all the meaning of it once this laptop purchased

Averatec laptops might look like quality, but they suck, well and truly. Generate too much heat, slow, etc.

keep in mind your 6120 is nothing more than a low-end Uniwill 258KA0 (AMD64) or 258KA1 (P4). My 258KA0 has been pretty reliable over the course of the year (granted the screen died and the eithernet port broke...both of which got repaired under warranty). Sure there is some heat from this system, but I guess you should have done your research before you bought it. I find the CD-RW drive to be pretty good. Your comment on the hard drive is kinda pointless because you are free to swap in a 7k60 at your own cost (i have a 7k60 in mine and i love it...very nice). Now, I know your laptop doesn't ahve shared video memory, it has a 128mb ati 9600 (thus why i said low-end 258ka0/1......most models come with 9700 128mb), i might be wrong...but I have never heard of a shared memory uniwill 258ka0/1.

Ok first of all , when you buy a laptop from a manufacturer , you do not want to change all the parts , i mean if you buy a computer that comes with a 60Gb HD , you do not want to change the Hd cause the one in the laptop sucks .... it doesnt make any sense , (Because Averatec Computer are not customizable like dell , hp , etc...) plus if you change the parts yourself , the warranty is void.

and buy the way here are the stats of my Avertatec :

OS Microsoft® Windows® XP Pro Edition
LCD Size 15.4'' WXGA
Optical Drive Dual DVD +/- Burner Dual DVD +/- Burner
Hard Drive 60Gb
Memory 512MB DDR
Wireless LAN 802.11g 802.11g
USB (4x) 2.0
DimensionsWxDxH) 13.98" x 10.04" x 1.18"
Weight (lbs.) 6 lbs. 6 lbs.
Part # AV6210X60-01

from : http://www.averatec.com/notebooks/6200series.htm

Do you see any video cards in there ? it's shared , up to 128Mb the "CD-RW" you're talking about , well i dont have that , i got a DVD Writter , and it sucks , actually everything sucks in this computer , not to be rude , but i dont care that my laptop is a "low-end Uniwill 258KA0" the way it was assembled and the hardware chosen by averatec is just really crappy , and i felt it was important for him to know . Averatec are selling cheap Portable system , and Averatec as of my personal opinion , fits the old saying : You get what you paid for !

And by the way when you say "but I guess you should have done your research before you bought it" i did not care at that time , cause it was so cheap and it was only a transition laptop , cause i have a big desktop at home and that laptop was just for the mobility from time to time.

you said "Sure there is some heat from this system" like it was normal heating , sorry but it aint normal , my xp serial number sticker has melted , have you ever seen that before , well not me , i was looking at the temp of the laptop and it was just an awfull show , running at 70-90 Celcius is just too hot .

ok, see, now this is where we differ. you first said you owned a 6100 series, which is based on the uniwill 258ka0/1 chassis, and now you are linking me to the 6200 which is not a uniwill based system.

Ohh sorry did not see that typo error ! i meant to write "6210" still the 6100 series has probably no dedicated video card since they dont mention anything about a graphic card ,

but the other thing i meant is that even if it is based on the 258ka0/1 chasis , doesnt mean that the hardware from a manufacturer to another is the same , you can build a 2500$Us laptop on that chasis , but you can also build a 1000$ laptop on that same chasis ...

Im not the only one saying that Averatec is bad , i mean you know how computers work , today with that new technology , hardware have become , more and more fragile , and hard to keep in good shape , so when buying a computer , you always have to go for the "little bit more expensive" hardware just to get quality .cause you know if you go cheap , it wont last ...

Averatec i would say is good if youre looking for a cheap laptop , you get good performance for the amount of money your giving them , the thing is that if you use the laptop a bit more and start playing game or anything like multimedia editing , photoshop..., you will have problems with it quickly ,since the system id running too hot and the hardware will suffer from that temp. these Averatec laptop are good if you dont move the laptop from a place to another , and they are mostly made for web browsing , checking emails , and a bit of Office work . (Words , Excel ...) and to watch movie ...

Thats my own opinion .
