9860 experiencing some slowdown

I noticed this problem about 3 weeks ago. I've had my 9860 for about 8 months now and I haven't had a problem with slowdown during gaming, but lately I've been experiencing some. While playing games, it will drop in framerate to a point where it's still playable, but will give you a headache because it's so jittery. I'm not talking just a drop of like 5-10fps but it will go from 60fps to around 10fps and will stay there for around 5 minutes then I'll hear the fans spin faster and it'll be back to normal. Then it will repeat and continue to slowdown then go back to normal throughout the game. I've experienced it with World of Warcraft, Doom 3, and the Age of Empires 3 demo. Any ideas on why this is happening and any suggestions on how to fix this?

My setup is:
3.0GHz P4
Mobility Radeon X800
1GB Ram

sounds like a heating issue.

do u have the new fan bios? (http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=93758)

i would try installing this so u can keep the fans on.
if your sys does not slow down witht the fans on then u know its a heat issue.

good luck!

I would suggest getting yourself a couple cans of compressed air and blowing the crap out of your fans/heatsinks. Trust me. The dust IS there so make sure you do it someplace where it will be easy to clean up. DO NOT use a vacuum cleaner on your lappy,
Hope this helps...

Do you take the plates off the bottom of your unit when you do this or do you just blow the air right into the bottom of the unit without removing the plates?

In regards to the compressed air, I've never done that before so how do you do it exactly? Do I just blow it straight into the vents or do I have to do something else beforehand? I am unsure where the dust will go if I just blow it straight in.

I'll download the new fan bios and give those a try as well.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Edit: Oh and I have a few questions from Luke's directions in the thread.

He says to format a floppy disk as an MS-DOS startup disk. Could someone tell me how to do this?

Also, he says the bios are only for those with the H8 fan bios. How do I find out if I have these? I haven't installed any bios since I got my laptop.

And actually, I'm just unsure of how to do the whole bios process so if someone could instruct me as to how to do it exactly that would be appreciated. TY

bascially put a blank floppy into the drive and in my computer right click the a: drive and in the pop out menu select format. when the format window pops up select (on the near bottom) copy system files. this will format the floppy disk and put system files onto to the disk so your system can boot up in dos. and as far as if your laptop can or can not have or have not...try this link...... http://www.notebookforums.com/showth...&page=13&pp=15

steps: read these directions and understand then before you go any further!!
if you mess up there is no UNDO!

1 make bootable floppy disk
2 copy h8flash.exe h8.bin from the H8S8.zip file into the a: drive.
(so now your floppy disk should have system files and h8flash.exe h8.bin on it)

3 Restart your computer with the floppy disk in, as soon as you reach A:\ prompt (dos mode) you will type the following command "h8flash.exe h8.bin". it should run it self afterwards.

the command line should look like this a:\h8flash.exe h8.bin

4 run winphlash.exe it will kind of unpack, unzip, what ever, a file to your desktop. double click this file, then it once again unpaks, unzip, what ever, a folder to your desktop or where ever you told it to unpack to.

5 open the folder run setup and follow the directions.

thats what luke told me and i'm sticking by it!
so if you mess up yell at luke....

Ah I see thanks. Apparently, I have the H6 fan bios. How do I go about getting the H8 bios?

So the first part of Luke's post is to install the H8 then the second part is to install the newest BIOS?

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I finally updated my bios to the H8 ones. After I typed in h8flash.exe h8.bin, it did its thing and it said "Flash Completed!" "Pleast Turn Off Your Computer" and it had the A: prompt on the next line. I don't really know if there's a command to turn the computer off so I just held the power button and turned it off that way. Also, I took out the floppy disk since I didn't want it booting from it again. Was I supposed to leave it in or take it out?

Anyway, I'm just wondering if I actually do have the H8 fan bios now and if there's any way to check.

edit: Actually, I guess it worked since I can control my fan speed using fn + f2. I have another question though.

When running WinPhlash, there are two fields for you to choose a file for. The first one says "Specify backup file for existing BIOS" and the other one says "Specify new BIOS file." So obviously, I pick R105B.WPH file for the second one, but do I just leave the first field as "bios.bak" or do I need to select the H8 bios file? If I do, where can I find it?

Update: After updating to the latest fan bios and setting them to continuous, I'm still getting some slowdown. During gameplay, I'll experience slowdowns that last for about 2-3 minutes each where the framerate will drop really low and the game gets stuttery. They are about 5-10 minutes apart and sometimes are frequent, and sometimes not. Also, the lowest idle temperature I've gotten my 9860 at is 54 degrees even with the new fan settings.

I guess I'm going to need to clean the dust out of my fans like YelowC4S suggested, but I'm not sure how to do that since I've never done it before. Do I just turn the computer over and blow the compressed air into the fan vents or do I need to take off the plates covering the fans? Also, if that doesn't solve the problem, what else could be causing this slowdown if it's not a heating issue?

Is there a a step by step guide with photos on this cleaning? If not, it would make a great sticky if someone could do it.
