The z70va is noisy because the fan is always on...how do you control the fan speed? - Page 4

hmm....updated from 1.8.xxx to 1.9, and unchecked the temp reading box, restarted, and still SpeedFan is NOT picking up out GPU temp...

I think you have a defective sensor.

Also, just wanna say, I heard back from Rick, and he said that, at least on the Z71V, there have been firmware updates that have fixed some similar fan problems to mine. I am now in the process of seeing how i can get these firmware updates, and try those out before i try to take more serious actions, such as sending the lappy in and everything...

**EDIT**
But ya i am thinking my sensor is defective as well..

I would appreciate it if other Z70 owners could chime in and let me know if the GPU fan (upper lefthand corner) is constantly running. I'm not concerned whether it's noisy just want to know if it's always on and running at a constant rate when plugged in. thanks!

I'm hesitant to type this cause I don't want to jinx myself . I was the recipient of a z70va from geared2play (their first batch). I have had it for 3 days now and have had no fan issues. It will come on once and a while during normal activity(surfing, word, etc) but only for a couple seconds at a time. When I ran 3dMark however, it was on the entire time the test was running. But this is what I expected and seems normal. But man, the fan at full speed is not quiet and if yours is running at full speed all the time, I would return it because it seems like a defect. My question to you is, was your fan on 100% straight out of the box - first time on, was it cranking at full speed or did it gradually get like that?

Just to be absolutely clear, you're starting up Everest before SpeedFan right? That's the only way the Local, Remote2 and Temp1 readings will be available.

Like pinktri, I have the same problem.

Now, the fan from the upper left hand corner DOES NOT run at 100%. I have heard it runs at 100% and it is loud. However, the fan that we are having is maybe 40-50% speed and is constant and annoying, and very audible. At 25-35%, the fan noise is fine and I am happy with it. This 25-35% speed only exists about 2-3 minutes when it was first turned on when the computer has been off for more than 1 hour.

This is exactly what i'm dealing with. MLH, thanks for the response. Now I know my notebook is defective. Like I said, my laptop's GPU fan has been running constantly since I got it. It's not running at 100% but it's definitely loud.

ya i am running everast before speedfan, but still nothing...

So far we got 3 of these loud z70va's and one was a z70v. Its amazing but they are the same quite machine as all the rest of them are. If your reading this thread consider that what a select few individuals are saying goes against 100 times as many. Its called user preference. Perhaps some people are comparing this to a fanless mac. After reading this thread i realized that certain people will take the word "almost silent" too literally. Let me rephrase my analysis of the z70va. Its as far away from loud as one mobile powerhouse can get. Anyone that disagrees return your laptop to your dealer and hope they dont think your "nutty". Now i dont know how many of you had this as a preorder. The new batch should be the same as the "original". If your unceartain if your fan may be malfunctioning or whatever return it to your dealer and ask to be inspected. You should all get the same answer. "Its the same as all the rest". Perhaps there is an exception to the rule but i ve been doing this long enough to know that alot of avid forum goers are extremely picky and overly worried their laptop is going to break or worse yett is already broken.

MLH
I belive the posters who think they have a bad fan are referring to the pitch of the fan. It is low noise and overwhelming majority will think nothing of it. A few people may find it annoying. If you do there is absolutely nothing you can do about it short of having your dealer mod it out with a different fan which will most likely produce more noise but a deeper pitch. There is no solution to this. Eventually most people that think their laptop is broken will get used to it. I havent seen the units in question here but i am fairly confident its more of the same. Also i ve seen a few times where an oscillating fan can cause the keyboard to "rumble". I have that on my m5n.

I remember when I got my Z70V- with the previous bios revision (02), the fans were more silent and took longer to kick on. With the revisions after that (think I'm on 06 right now), the fans kicked on pretty fast. I thought it was an Asus thing- I think they decided that the fans should've kicked on a lot sooner to get the heat out. I'm sure they wouldnt make these revisions to piss people off, but more for the user's benefit. So I would say that this is normal and not something broken.

A good counter to the "fan noise" is to simply undervolt/underclock the Z70 with Centrino Hardware Control (CHC). Yes, I know, we shouldn't have to install something just to so-called "fix this problem", but doing this does offer a lot more benefits: cooler temps, increase life of cpu, fans won't kick on that fast since it wouldn't be getting too hot, and best of all- will extend your battery life. I get over 4hrs now. Also a good thing- it'll work right out of the box without any configuring (so newbies welcome). Of course you can do a search on other people's settings and see how low they went. Make sure you uninstall Power4Gear first, since you won't be needing it. You can download CHC here: http://www.pbus-167.com/chc.htm#anchor_download

Concerning undervolting....I undervolt my P-M 2Ghz at .7v-1.164v (800Mhz - 2Ghz), and find that it does ZERO to reduce fan noise. The reason being that although undervolting reduces temps by an amazing 15 deg under load, it never reduces temps below the 55 deg C threshold that determines when the fans spin down.

I have seen zero impact undervolting to .7v at 800Mhz in terms of temperatures or fan noise.

I am fairly amazed at just how hot the Pentium M runs considering how little power it draws. Granted my 8104 has only a single fan and a poor cooling system, but temps are in the 67 deg range under load (81+ deg before undervolting).

Wow, that's interesting about your Acer, I was actually in the market for that a while back. I've got a Z70V and it brings the temp down all the way to the mid 30's at start up. It hangs in the 40-50c range most of the time, and jumps to the 60 while gaming and quickly comes down afterwards. I think CHC does wonders for my system and many other Z70 users on many forums. Plus can't complain about having an extra 30+% of battery time either.

I just received my z70va from ISTNC today (2005 Sep 16). It is loud. The primary culprit is the fan blowing, very hot air, from the right vent. This SUCKS.

Dang, that's hot...mine runs right around 60 under normal use if I don't undervolt...never higher than about 72 (I think that's the highest I've ever seen it) when gaming or doing a stress test...with undervolting, it hangs around 52 under normal use, in the 40s if it's idling...

Well he's got an Acer TM8104, different system- not a Z70.
Right, but I was thinking that the Z70V didn't have the best cooling and then I see that his Acer gets so hot...makes me feel better...

I know the feeling. Does your GPU fan run constantly at a consistant rate?

Wow
This is scary. I am out of here, some of you guys are just plain nutty
