ABF's Visit to the Apple Store

Hello apple fans and stuff.

Well, me, the famous Apple Troll has gone to an Apple Store today, of all places. I figured i'd do a quick write-up here just to let you all (esp. Kakaze) know that I've given Apple a chance to impress me.

I still stick to my opinion that the iBook is not very practical and is plagued with hardware issues, and that the 15" and 17" powerbooks are well...not really the best bang for the buck if you know what I mean, but otherwise, here are my comments.

The iPods:
First things first, how can we forget the iPod Nano. If I am not mistaken they are flash drive operated because there is no freaken way there is a hard drive in that thing. I must say its probably the tinest MP3 player with a color screen I've ever seen, pretty impressed by its size:feature ratio, but the price is a bummer, $300 for 4gb when you can get a 20gb full sized ipod for the same price...you know. Nice little thing, but if they made the 4gb at $200, it would sell a hell lot better (...granted we dont know how they are selling period since they've only been on the market for 2 days). It shall be known that the stock earbuds well...SUCK (compared to the Shure and ER headphones). The iPod shuffle feels cheap, it really does (compared to some flash players by iRiver). The regular ipod is same as it's ever been i guess, love it or hate it, it will be around for a long time.

The Laptops:
Well, lets get the iBook out of the way. both the 12" and 14" models look and feel cheap. The display models were DIRTY proving it once and for all that white is not a practical color. They were also rather heavy for 14" laptops (my Thinkpad T23 feels lighter and still built solid). The powerbook is another story, the silver is a more practical color, and the metal has taht cool "look at me, i am not plastic" feel to it, can't say I don't like it...its cool. The 12" model is rather uncomfortable, but then again, what 12" laptop is? The 15" is rather average I'd say, granted that for the price thought they could have put in a card better than the 9700. The 17" does have some benefits. First of all, all that empty space around the palmrest and where the speakers are...just make it look very plain, which hurts its otherwise "cool factor". I'll give one thing to the 17" powerbook though, its by far the thinnest and lightest 17" i've ever seen, and to have a mobile 17" has its benefits i guess (note: weight and size comparison was done to my 15.4" uniwill and the 17" Dell XPS Gen2) Now as soon as they go intel, put in a 2nd mouse button, and upgrade the video to at least x700 or 6600, i might even end up buying a 15" model..who knows

The Desktops:
The PowerMacs are over priced and underpowered to say the least. The new iMacs are just UGLY (i like the prev gen ones...with the pod and the screen going off on a metal joint). The eMacs are well....value systems (as far as macs go at least...the built in speakers SUCK). The Mini has that amazing factor going for it that they managed to squeeze a fully funtioning desktop in that small box, but because its on a bit of a slow end....i guess its fine for internet and word.

The Screens:
Must say I am rather impressed with the 30" Cinema Display, but it would cost you an Arm and Leg ($3000). I must note there was some ghosting on it, but just because of its sheer size....WOW...MASSIVE!

Mice:
the Pro-Mouse....i find it as uncomfortable as i ever had, I like my right-click way too much to give it up. The mighty mouse...finally! a 2 button mouse from apple. However, its also not very practical. Its not responsive (compared to my iogear GKM521R) enough and that little ball is not very effective, I find the scroll wheel on standard mice much more effective than that little ball. And on top of it, the white color is sorta ugly, wish they made it clear, or silver.

The Verdict:
Although Apple has improved in many areas in the last few years, there is still plenty of room to grow. No, you won't find me owning an Apple product any time in the near future....but maybe some day. I'll admit they have some stuff with a WOW factor (the nano for its size, the 17" pb for its thickness and weight, the 30" display for its...wow, and the mini for its size), however they also have a few downfalls that must be corrected.

Here is just a brief list of what I'd like to see changed:
-Go x86 (which will be done soon)
- video card upgrades (esp for ibook and pb)
- slight price drop (to be more competitive)
- dump white...bad color for electronics

i don't hate *everything*. i like the 30" screen, and i like some things about the nano, mini and 17"pb, just not enough of each as a "package" to actually buy one

He just dislikes Apple, deep down he knows it, we already know it.

Well heck, since we all know about it why do people have to keep bringing it up. Raise your hand if you're tired of listening to abf's anti apple rants!

after reading what is said about the iPods, $300 for a 4GB flash mp3 player isn't that much considering a 4GB flash drive itself costs about $300. Then it goes on about saying that the earphones suck compared to shure and e4. WTF mp3 player comes with shure or e4, um, none. So you have to compare the headphones that come with the ipod with other headphones that come with their mp3 players. After reading that I am not even going to bother reading on.

Small correction: Ipod nano 4gb is $249 not 300. And if you are eligible for a student/faculty discout it is $229. Very competitive indeed for a 4gb player.
Cheers,

Little off topic but, I was thinking about buying a 20GB iPod before I went to college and I wanted to see if people that owned one liked it or not. Anyways, thanks in advance.

I don't think iBook's look cheap. They look a bit toy-like. I think they look pretty cool, actually. A little too plasticky, though, so I know what you mean.

And I would say that I think the 12" iBook's price/value ratio is quite good. 5lbs, 4.5 hours of battery life, and solid application set and OS usability = something that I would definately recommend trying (I say "trying", becuase I've never actually owned an iBook )

And I happen to think that white isn't too bad a color for electonics; they have to stick with it to some extent, anyways, because they've built a trademark with it. It's too valuable from a marketing standpoint.

And, finally, I'm not a Mac user (maybe a closet Apple fan), but I find some of ABF's gripes a little aggravating, too. Specifically: why do you keep insisting on the switch from PowerPC to x86 and the 2-button mouse feature to be insurmountable barriers between you and the use of a Mac? I mean, they are supposedly switching to the x86 platform primarily because they won't be able to sustain performance increases while keeping power consumption down to a reasonable level. So, if PowerPC (G4/G5) performance is good enough now for Mac OS X use (e.g. word processing, Internet, etc.), then why keep insisting that someone wait for the Pentium (M?) chips to land in an iBook/Powerbook? Furthermore: can't you just BUY a standard windows mouse, like the MS USB Optical Mouse, or the MS Intellimouse Optical 1.1, or any Logitech USB mouse, and wouldn't they ALL work flawlessly for providing basic left/right-click and scroll wheel functionality with the Mac OS X?

Just my 2 cents: The 12" PowerBook is a workhorse. Agree it would be nice to have an updated vid card, but it can still handle an amazing range of applications - especially for photo/video/web design work. The portability is great - and it easily connects to an external display.

Absolutely can't agree that the PowerMacs are underpowered...but that, again, is just one happy Mac user's opinion. I also have a high powered Windows PC for gaming. It's great, but I much prefer the PowerMac and Mac OSX...

I think we would all like to see these things....

Video card upgrades are in order these days (but for what is an excellent question...)

I don't think we will see apple drop prices, ditto alienware and a whole other range of PC builders.

Powermacs - Overpriced - Probably, Underpowered - Nope
I personally don't think the shuffle looks cheap, however it certainly is cheap...

The nano's big selling point is its size, ditto for example to Motorola Razr, or Some of the Sony Cybershot digital cameras.

And I totally agree that the default Ipod headphones are crap, as are pretty much any you get with an MP3 player.

This thread has as much of a point as an octagerian in need of a viagra hit.

exciting times ahead though ABF: with the release of Vista and parallel hardware improvements Apple has to think way ahead to stay competitive ... the gap is closing, its up to Apple to make that gap wider again.

Funny, when I go into stores like CompUSA and BestBuy etc, I see disgustingly ugly PC's running an OS plagued with spyware and virus problems. Going into an Apple Store is nirvana in comparison!

Well said. Let me just translate ABF's entire original post for everyone-

"Hi. My name is Abf. I hate Apple. Everyone knows this. I am going to go to the Apple store today for no reason at all, even though I hate Apple. I just don't have anything better to do, and I don't feel like installing some random version of Linux on one of my garbage laptops today, for no reason at all, like I always do.

Let's see. I hate the iBook. Blah blah blah. Oooo.... new iPod. Sexy. Very nice. I hate Apple though, so this thing is overpriced. You should buy the mp3 player that I have instead because it has an fm tuner, and that totally rocks.

Why don't these laptops have 2 mouse buttons? What is this garbage 9700 video card in these laptops? That is just stupid. All I do is play games all day so I need the best video card ever made.

White is a dumb color for electronics. That make sense. Why are these laptops so sexy? That is just stupid. Computers are supposed to be ugly as hell. Stupid Apple. These iMacs are ugly too. So ugly. I know what is good looking, so believe me.

Why is this new mouse white? That is stupid. White is so ugly. I would know. I already said so. It should be silver, like all those ugly pc laptopts out there.

let m ejust say again that I think white is a stupid color for electronic, in case you didn't take note already."

End abf-type rambling. I feel better now.

Why post this? Do you really have nothing better to do with your life? Go outside for once. Meet people. Find a nice girl. Grow up.

Will edit in a few with what I see when I walk into a Best Buy or CompUSA and see pc laptops.

EDIT: Here is me looking at pc laptops.

So I walk into Best Buy the other day, browsing around and whatnot. Some woman is checking out the Mac Mini, because, let's fac eit- its damn cool looking. Employee starts talking to here. I watch, this should be interesting, as I am sure the employee hates Apple and will tell here to buy something else. The jist of his conversation with her- It's made by Apple, there isn't much software for it, and its slightly faster then a Celeron. I should have punched him in the face right then and there. Jackass.

Anyways..... so I browse laptops and such. Damn, these things are ugly. It's like the same ugly ass laptop cloned 30 times. And they all have such garbage features. And most of them have celerons in them, 40 gig hard drives, and a combo drive. And cost around $800. Hmm... I would buy that over an iBook. Right...

Granted, there are a few centrino laptops out with a good price point, but I am not interested. My Gateway is a hella lot better and gets friggin awesome battery life. It's got a 9600 in it, which is great since I have a life and don't play games on it all day long at super high res.... but I can fire up pretty much any game, if I wanted to, and play happily.

I like it when a salesman talks to people about laptops and what they come with and such. The best thing- the majority of the discussion is about what spyware it comes with and what else to buy. That is just awesome.

Ha..I got berated by an assistant manager at a CrapUSA once. There was a couple looking at laptops for their daughter. I happened to start looking at the same one they were standing in front of. The sales rep was floundering. They asked various questions and the he either ignored them or didn't know the answers. I ended up answering one. At that point the sales rep started talking to someone else so I continued conversing with the couple. They browsed around some and eventually left. The assistant manager (or weasel as I like to refer to him as) started giving me lip about interfering with a potential sale. I told him I didn't interfere with the sale. His employee walked away from the shoppers and we began conversing (which I pointed out to him he cannot tell me who or who I cannot speak with). I went on to add that from their questions and the little scrap of paper in their hands they were jotting notes on that it was obvious they window shopping (no pun intended) and just gathering info so they could figure out which PC to get. He mumbled that he can't have me walking around the store disrupting things, which I again reitterated that I wasn't. At that point I felt maybe I needed to talk to the store manager and curiously our conversation was at an end..little weasel. The worst part of it was the white film of crud coating his teeth. He must have just gotten back from lunch or has poor hygene skills in general...

P.S. And that's funny, abf going to an Apple store and not liking anything. Is that being Applephobic?

Is there anything at Apple you would like to buy?

As long as you're dreaming why didn't you say 30" Cinema Display??
