Is Ferrari 4005 WSXGA Screen ideal for watching DVDs?

hi i want to buy the ferrari 4005 cause my ASUS W1N is gonna be stolen by my fiancee :P
ehhehe
anyway i already read some review about it, and the spec also seems to suit me very well, (only that Red screen Bleeding problem) that have not solved yet.

anyway i want to know wheter the WSXGA Screen is suitable to watch DVDin fullscreen mode or not ?
cause i've read some people said that "black bars" appears on the screen if u use it for watching DVDs.

I'm WAtching DVD a lot on the go, so i won't buy the ferrari if i can't watch DVD in full screen mode without those black bars.

FYI My Asus W1N screen resolution is WXGA .

thx.

Considering that widescreen notebooks are at 16:10 aspect ratio and widescreen movies are at 16:9 aspect ratio, you'll still see black bars at the top and bottom. However, they won't be nearly as pronounced as on a standard 4:3 ratio screen

if you use PowerDVD (comes with the ferrari), you can fix the 16:10 16:9 difference so the movie appears in full screen. This goes for any Widescreen LCD.

Can you tell me how do we make it? I have tried everything on my f4005 and i still have black bars. The only way to get rid of them is by enabling pan&scan on 2.35:1 but this crops a lot the left and right viewing space. Isn't there another way to crop only a few of the sides and reduce the black bars?

Very few movies are actually 16:9.... Most movies are of differing sizes..

16:9 is the ratio for HD TV.

Power DVD has all those options

Yes but they do nothing. On my desktop pc (19' 4:3 crt) when playing with those features i can resize the image and reduce the bars. On my widescreen ferrari the reduction of the bars is very little. Shouldn't there be a way to crop only a few of the sides and have small bars as if the play was 16:9?

I think movies today come in 2 different types of widescreen formats. I am not sure about the ratios (16:9 etc). With one of these formats, PowerDVD is able to adjust the ratio so there are no black bars. With the other one, PowerDVD adjusts so the black bars are less noticable, but apparant. Just depends on which widescreen format the movie is in.

Maybe someone else knows the exact aspect ratios.

how about the screen res,
does WSXGA screen more grainy pictures/artifact compared to WXGA when watching DVD ??
no...graininess when comparing widescreen and fullscreen LCDs of similar size is not a factor.

what i meant is not Wide vs full screen,
but Wide XGA VS Wide SXGA
they both have different resolution right?
and DVD's aso have it's naative resolution, so does the pic look the same or different?, thanks.

WXGA- either 1280x800 or true wxga 1280x768
WSXGA- 1680x1050

If you think about it, the dvd is still being displayed over the same screen are on both resolutions, so the picture quality will be the same. (The wsxga will just be blending more pixels, but should be identical quality). You will get more graininess when playing lower quality videos (ie divx), because the wsxga will be further from native res.

WINDVD also has a widescreen mode. If you remove the fixed aspect ratio feature in the settings then the video will always resize to fill the screen.

any wide-screen would do, regardless the brand.
