Does anyone hate the lid of the m70?

When I look at the lid of the m70, I see the words "Precision" all over the place.

That does not look very attractive. Is there a way to get rid of those words on the cover or is it permanently painted onto the lid?

I'm slightly confused, are you looking at the M70 or do you own an M70? Personally I don't mind the "precision" prints; they look a lot worse in photos than they actually are. Unfortunately, if you really can't stand them, there is no simply way to get rid of them. I suppose you could repaint just the lid (or buy a spare to mess around with like I did). That seems like a bit of an extreme though. Like I said, they really don't look as bad as the pictures indicate.

I don't have the m70 but I am thinking about getting it. I am in the process of returning my less-than-a-week-old Asus z70va to get this m70 because I heard that it is very quiet.

When I looked at the photo of the m70, I saw the words "precision" all over the lid cover.
This does not look very good and at first thought that it was just a plastic protective covering that you can take off. But as I looked at it closely, it looks like it will be there permanently.

I would still probably get the m70 but now that feature adds another negative to the list of negatives, which now consists of "1. thick; 2. heavier than most light 15.4 inch laptop"

If you are going to use the look of the back of the screen as a reason to not buy an M70 then you probably don't need the best, most powerful, 15.4" Dell notebook ever. It is in fact smaller than the previous generation notebooks in that screen range, packs one hell of a punch, looks gorgous, has a rock-solid keyboard with spill-protection, HD-protection, and is built like a tank. The writing on the back of the screen is actually very small print, more like a wallpaper effect. To read what the print says one needs to be up close. From a distance it is but a stylish pattern. I would have thought the huge Dell logo in the middle of the back of the screen is much more outlandish - but that is not confined to an M70. There are style features of the i6000/i9300 family that are thankfully absent in the Latitude/Precision range which in general are visually lower key in aesthetic flourishes than the Inspirons, IMHO. Anyway, back to the point: there should be 50 or more issues more relevent to the qualities of an M70 that should sway your choice one way or the other before that one. If the look still bugs you, then there are lots of pretty notebooks around. If you like the M70 but not the that one feature, then get a D810: the back of the screen has a nice plain look and the pc itself an ATI X600 gpu rather than a 256MB Nvidia QuadroFX Go 1400. Much cheaper too.

^Agreed. Keep in mind that the M70 is MUCH lighter than most workstation notebooks. It is certainly not an ultralight, but it doesn't pretend to be one either. It's still lighter than a 9300, and when you factor in the incredible power this thing is packing (not to mention the top notch build quality), that's really rather impressive. What are you planning on using the notebook for, by the way?

My decision on getting the m70 is the graphic power to play games and the quiet level of fan noise.
I also like the size of 15.4 inch screen and not weighing over 8 lbs.

The words "precision" on the lid cover is only a minor flaw. It won't keep that from preventing me purchasing the m70.

Perhaps you should consider the 9300 then which has a more powerful graphics card and larger screen. The M70 is a fine notebook but its a professional workstation and sounds like you arent doing cad/maya, things like that so why get it when the 9300 is half the price?
When I got my 9300 I wasnt wild about the white edges but they grew on me and Im sure if you got the m70 you wouldnt mind the precision print on the cover that much besides, how often will you be looking at it anyhow when you are using the laptop??

Or...there is the XPS Gen2 with a 6800Ultra card, the best out there for gaming which is a little cheaper than the M70 and has a totally unique look to it. For extreme gaming I would recommend the XPS Gen2 over the M70.

Cutters, you have been saying for a while that the M70 is twice as expensive as the i9300. Yet just a moment ago I configured on the US Dell web site (Small business) an equivalent M70 and i9300, both with 2G cpu, WUXGA, 80GB HD, 1GB ram, DVD burner, XP Professional, and they came out about the same: M70 @ $2416 and the i9300 @ $2583. This is pretty much the situation in Australia also. What have I missed?

I would agree that Cutters is exaggerating a little here, but you do have to consider that there are far more coupons for the home site than for the business site. When you factor in a $750 off or 25% off coupon, there is definitely a difference in price. It's definitely not twice the price though.

Having a look on the net, I found a pic of the lid:

Wow, its really paterned on there!! I like it though. Give it that extra "premium" touch to go with the price tag.

The reason that I am not getting the 9300 or the XPS 2 is because I already have a 17 inch laptop. Well, I don't have it now because I gave it to my wife but it is a Gateway m680 with X700 graphic card.

So now I want a laptop that is smaller and more portable. That is why I bought the 15.4 inch Asus z70va with X700 ATI. I received this great looking laptop on Friday, 3 days ago...but the constant spinning of the fan producing constant annoying noise make return it. I am in the process of getting it returned.

So now I turned to the Dell m70. The member laptop<3 hates fan noise and he actually stated that he loves the Dell m70 due to the quietness of the machine.

I can get a good m70 for $2200 from Ebay so I am looking into getting it now.

Yes but here in the states you then take your handy dandy 750 off coupon or the new 45 percent off inspiron coupon and VOILA, two 9300's for the price of one M70. Roughly ofcourse.
Thats why (at least here in the states) it makes no sense to purchase an M70 for multimedia purposes.
Can you use the dell coupons down under?

Unless you want a 15.4". Not everyone wants a 17" monster!

We rarely get them, and they are crap if we do. $50 off $1399, $200 of $1999, that sort of thing. No US$750 off US$1499 here

e d

a monster you say? half an inch deeper and an inch wider than either the m70 or the d810 OR the 6000, I hardly call that monster , check out the comparison pics in the pics threads of a 700m, 6000 and 9300 ( the 6000 is the same size as the d810 and m70) side by side and stacked on top of one another, brillian photo work by that poster! hardly a monster, I cant imagine going back to anything smaller.

Yeah, you could buy a 9300 AND a 700M for the price of an M70
Dont get me wrong, the M70 is nice and all, I did consider that model before making my purchase.
