Moving on. I finally got my exchanged laptop back and I must say everything is fine. There was definitely something wrong with the other Z70va because the fan had a distinct whine and would never shut off on ac power. My reseller also experienced the same thing after testing it out. So to all who thought me and Van were crazy please chill out. Now I can honestly say the refresh is behaving as it should. The fan is quiet and shuts off most of the time when surfing or running light apps. (no undervolting or fan control) This is what I expected from the laptop. To be honest, I now understand why people thought we were being picky and overly sensitive. After being on both sides of the coin I can definitely say that I was not crazy, picky or sensitive to noise. What a huge difference it makes. So if anyone is having issues like was please don't hesitate to ask questions. good luck to you all and thanks for all the help guys!

edit: Thanks to ISTNC for the remarkable customer support.
Kinda funny how you tell me not to comment on something, yet turn around and pretty much agree with my post.

If it actually had a problem, and that problem was affecting the performance of your laptop, then I could understand your situation.

I have owned both the Asus Z71v and Asus W3v. Both of which have been highly criticized for sparklies and heat, respectively. Many people were discouraged from buying either laptop because of this. Furthermore, I have noticed other posters in other threads saying something like "Dont buy the Z70va...the fan always runs." This is hardly a good reason not to buy the laptop. But again, if it was just an isolated problem, and people for whatever reason thought that all z70VAs had that problem, it needs to be known..

Interesting...mine comes on at 55 initially (about 50% speed), then goes off at 50, then comes back on at about 59, then back off at 50 and so on...That's undervolted at about 100/120.

Hi!

I resently bought Asus M6V(aka. z70v)Otherwise it is a great notebook but I think I have defective GPU-fan.( one in the left hand side of the notebook) For a first two weeks the fan was fine. The fan was constantly on but it didn't bother me much because the noise was low whirl. Then the fan started to behave strangely, it started to keep this scratching, whining and crackling noise and it is now much louder than it was at first. I can't describe this noise but it souds like there is something wrong with fan bearings. If I move this notebook or tilt it a bit the fan starts to sound like the propeller plades are hitting on something. I had once a noisy cpu fan in my desktop and it sounded similar because the bearings were almost gone

Have you people had similar experiences with z70v or z70va?

I called Asus service but they are hesitant to RMA this because they think the loud fan noice is normal for this model and if they discover in the service that there is nothing wrong they bill me 110 euros for sending it for nothing. My reseller says that it should not keep those extra noises when you move this notebook.

I'm sorry if this is offtopic and excuse me my bad english.

It's probably the bearings going or the fan tilting. I would recommend RMAing it.

Why don't you try recording it using the notebook's built-in microphone and ask them to compare it to stuff recorded from their notebooks? Surely they have reference models that they could use, and if there are indeed noticeable scraping sounds, etc, it should be possible.

Well I managed to convince Asus that the fan is defective and finally got RMA-number. Now my notebook is on the way to service. Hope it doesn't take too long to fix it.
Thanks for input YuriSEAL

I hope you get it back with a better fan. If the fan is the same as all the rest i dont know what they can do? Would love to know if the trip made a difference,.

DOes this fan noise issue have anything to do with a particular reseller? I am curious about which reseller to purchase from but am hesitant over getting faulty fans and such. BTW, has anyone experienced any type of discoloration on their palm rests?

No, all the resellers get the same product from the same place. So the fans already come with the unit. If the reseller was using a bad HD or RAM, then it would be their fault. As for the discoloration, I doubt it. I think the color is in the mold itself. So it may be not painted, maybe for the silver accents on the edge though.

Yes and no the color goes pretty deep and hard to rub out. I got a notebook back from 2 years in iraq and another from gtmo after 2 years or so both had the same problem very worn palm rests. It either has something to do with sweaty hands or the soldiers sandpaperhandatitis. Perhaps wiping the palmrests free of crap once every so often and rubbing them down with some turtle wax or something can prevent it but its normal wear and tare.

Yea I am just curious about paint rubbing off. My gateway M680 has a large blemish in the shape of the US (with bits of Canada but no florida) where the left palm rest is. It really is a visual deterance.

I got my asus back. They changed the fan and it sounds "normal" for now but I still think that it's a noisy fan, just like when I first got this notebook. Think I just have to live with that.

I was surprised how fast I got it back. I sent it last Thursday and got it back today (Friday). Nearest Asus service center is in Holland ( I live in Finland)

How does the sound/heat issue differ in Z70va vs Z70v?
