Running OSX requires a fair amount of techincal knowledge, certainly its not something for the average computer user. And you still can't get 3d Acceleration, or even native resolution support.
And before you go harping on about Linux, KDE and gnome are basically windows clones, theres nothing beyond stability (and as you often say - windows is pretty stable these days) to make me want to use them and a whole host of reasons not to. The number one reason being that *shock* half my software won't work anymore, and to be fair Open Office sucks and its a straight clone of MS Office, just a few generations behind. The entire linux community seems hellbent on replicating windows. (However FreeBSD and Kamel looks interesting)
Why buy Sony Laptops??? Or IBM's??? or Alienware??? They're just normal components at Jacked up prices, especially Alienware.
I own a creative Muvo TX mp3 player, its a 256 MB player that acts as a USB stick, it works fine, it has FM Radio (and shitty reception) - I've never used it, it has a mic with a voice recording function - I've never used it. In fact all I've ever done is to play MP3's on it. And I think thats the case with most people. Most people don't want or care about Radio or a Mic, they have no use for those features (do you know anyone who bought an MP3 player to use it as a dictophone???). Its kind of like buying a computer because it has a card reader installed, or a Car for the cupholders.
Ipods look very nice, they're aesthetically far more appealing than anything Iriver, Creative or Sony currently have out (some of the newer sony's do look nice though), the clickwheel is very tactile and intuative, it takes all of 5 seconds for anyone to figure it out (wheras I did have to consult the manual to figure my Muvo out - its actually kinda neat all things considered).
And for god sakes - whats this bang for buck rubbish? I guess everyone here owns cheap furniture, cos its a good bang for your buck. Or drives a Ford Taurus because its a good bang for your buck, or maybe you just eat pasta - because guess what, Its cheap!
And anyway - Cars and Furniture are horrendous examples - why, they all cost a hell of alot more than an ipod, and to be fair $300 isn't exactly an enormous quantity of cash no matter how you look at it (unless your 4, when its pretty incomprehendable)
