Help with a key Asus Z70va decision

I really badly want to get this notebook. Several situations have arised though:

1.) I've discovered this "fan too loud!" problem
2.) I may want to wait for the DVI port
3.) The reseller I wanna purchase from may not have the 60GB 7200rpm hardisk I want

What I would like from you guys (and I'd appreciate it very much so), is if you guys can give me some input on those 3 listed areas (actually just 2; omit the DVI port one) :-P. How big of an issue do you guys see this loud fan as? And, performance wise, what do you guys think between the 100GB 5400rpm h-disk, and the 60GB 7200rpm h-disk? I'm not a complete gamer (ie I don't play games ALL the time), however, which do you think offers the best performance-to-price ratio, I guess? Thanks guys!

Well, the fan "problem" is more subjective than anything, I think. My Z70V's fan doesn't bother me at all, and it's probably not much different than the refresh's fan...and if you want the 7200 rpm drive, just don't order your notebook without an HD and buy one off newegg and put it in yourself, it'll probably be cheaper that way...

Oh, and as far as I can tell, the price to performance ratio is much better for 5400 rpm drives than the 7200, but some may beg to differ on that point.

Unless you can find a 7200rpm hdd somewhere else besides the reseller, you may be out of luck untill october. I talked to the guy at ITSNC and he said hitachi was having a sortage of parts and wouldn't send out and 7200 rpm drives untill october. Don't know if it is accurate or not though.

I think zipzoomfly.com has some 7200 drives in stock.

I don't think the fan is thaaaaaat bad. It's a little bit whiney when running at full speed, and definitely noisier than some of the other fans I've seen on notebooks. At first it was a bit annoying (coming from a z71v), but I've gotten used to it in a couple of days. If gaming, hopefully your sound is on so you won't hear the fans anyway.

So, you don't think it'd be too noisy in a lecture hall or a classroom, would you? Oh yeah, and regarding putting in your own harddisk...do you guys know if doing something like that would void ITSNC's warrant((y)ees)? Thanks!

If you buy it without a hard drive and put in your own, that certainly won't violate the warrantee.

and the thread's now in Asus Notebooks

In a classroom or lecture hall, the talking from either the professor/teacher or other students will certainly drown out the fan noise.

But in a quiet room at home, especially at night, (in my case) the fan can be heard 10 feet away and remember that it is constant. The fan in the upper left hand corner is ALWAYS on. The first 2-3 minutes the fan runs at a very quiet speed which I like and have no problem with...but after 2-3 minutes when the temperature rise to about 55 degrees, the fan speeds up and the constant/non-stop noise become unbearable to me.

Sound level is subjective, but just imagine that if you can hear the fan about 10 feet away, then you may have a better notion of it.

Remember, I have waited almost a month for this laptop and I certainly do not want to return it and have to endure the 15% restocking fee loss....so the last thing that I want to do is to return it. But in the end I have to return it because the fan noise is unbearable for me.

I wish ISTNC would have the 21 days no-restocking fee like Dell.com.

That is quick. If you don't mind me asking, who did you order your Z70Va from?
Thanks,

Yea I want to know also. I ordered mine last week and its coming this friday at the earliest.

Same here, mine should be here friday. I ordered from Geared2play.

Some of you must have very sensitive ears or something im at 67C under full load 15x multi right now running CHC's long stability test and i have to be right in front of the laptop in a very quiet room to even hear it. And it is just a dull low fan noise not whiny at all. As far as Hdd's go the 100gig will give you better speed with big files and the 7200 will be better with small files. Although i don't think that the minimal difference in performance justifies almost double the cost.

raidflex.. are you on Ac or Battery? ALL laptops tend to run quieter when on battery...
what voltages have you gotten down to ?
I am on AC. 6x .732 and 15x 1.036

So I'm starting to think that Vanco might of just gotten unlucky with his extremely noisy fan. Seems to me that most people aren't very put out by the noise, and I've read quite a few reviews that say the fan is pretty quite. I'm hoping that is the case.
I highely doubt you will have a problem with fan noise unless your always in a dead quiet room and want absolute silence. And i would recommend undervolting, it droped temps 20C on my Z70VA as we speak im running prime 95 at 15x multi 1.052V on the AC and its been going for 8hrs and im only at 68C.

Okay then

Would games and such (ie something like Battlefield 2) be considered big apps then (most probably yes); in that case, would you then say that the 100GB 7200rpm hdd would be best for gaming? Also (sry this is probably what you would call a "noobish" question), when shopping for a hdd for a notebook from lets say...Newegg.com, there isn't a specific size (dimensions of the hdd) that I should be looking for, right? I mean, if there's a hdd that says it is for notebooks, then it's one size fits all, right? Thanks
post #19 of 66
As far as I understand, there are different sizes even in laptop HDs. The 2.5" versions come nowadays usually in 9.5mm thickness, but I think they used to be thicker. Also, I'm not sure but there might be thinner versions around.

The 1.8" versions I know next to nothing about. They are, as far as I know, normally used in ultraportables etc. machines.

Hmm

Then, does anybody know which one(s) will fit into the Asus Z70Va notebook; I don't wanna end up buying a laptop hdd and then not having it fit into the darn thing. Thanks!
