This is prob. not the right area to post this, but I know this forum gets alot of us Dell users in it.

So one of my XPS2's got stolen this past weekend in Eugene Oregon, if anyone comes across anyone selling one in this area please contact me and let me know.

Service Tag: 8B97T71
Last Location: "The Black Forest" in Eugene, Oregon
Was in a red laptop backpack
Dell XPS2 - 2ghz
1GB Ram, 2x512MB
60gig drive
cdrw/dvd combo drive
Intel 2200 wireless (Unique Card, easy to verify by this component if laptop is recovered.)

$500 Reward for information leading to the recovery of this laptop, no questions asked.

I9kfangui source code is on this laptop, no further development can be done to the app we all know and love until i recover this sucker.

Anyone got any ideas on how to find a stolen laptop?

Thanks!

Sorry about your loss. I'd suggest using Lojack in the future.

Bothered, you bet I am.

At the same time i've never recovered a d@mn thing after it's been stolen, so there's very little hope that in that reguard. The cops here just don't give a crap, theft case's are always closed do to lack of evidence.

I'm going with the software lo-jack for the other computers. I'll spend some development time to modify it into the bios like they do on IBM's so they can't just swap out the hard drive or format it. If only there was a hardware lo-jack option.

Yea but like where was the laptop and where were you? Did you just leave it laying somewhere while you walked away to do something?

It was in it's backpack, behind my chair between the bar and my chair. Grabbed a smoke and it vanished.

Spudsdude. People aren't helping. You might want to talk to customer support or your sales rep at Dell, if its purchased through your company account. I'm 90% certain that they have it setup to "find" a stolen or lost laptop by the Service tag encoded in the bios. I think that as soon as someone hooks it up to the internet, they can find it. Obviously they have to connect to the internet. I'm not fully sure, but i could have sworn that this is the case...

Damn, i think the program is provided by computrace and you have to ask for it and pay extra. sorry man. still call support in case anyone tries to download updates or report a support issue using your service tag.

Most home owners insurance policies cover any stolen posessions worth more than $500. I'd look into that.

Computrace works but it can be beaten if you know what you are doing.

And which fine print are you referring to, oh knowledgeable one of the ALL CAPS? This fine print, perhaps?

"My laptop was only four days old when it was stolen from my home office. Fortunately it was protected with LoJack for Laptops. Three weeks after it was stolen, the Absolute Recovery Team tracked it down and then worked with the police to recover my computer. Boy, was that money well spent!"
-Dr. Mark LaPorta, My Medical Advocate, North Miami, Florida

or this....

"Last month, for instance, a distress call came from a laptop in McKinney, Texas. The local police stumbled onto a big chop-shop location with drugs and weapons. They also got the stolen computer back."

or....

"LoJack even offers a $1,000 recovery guarantee for your machine."

Apparently, it already installs in the BIOS.

Call DELL and explain what happened. They will FLAG your system as stolen. When the person calls in for help of any kind they will grab as much info as possible and pass it on to the local authorities in your area.

That's horrible ...I hope you get it back.
that sucks. what about calling the restaurant or bar or whatever it was you were in and ask for surveillance tapes or something?
That really makes me angry, spudsdude! Not that it should ever happen to anyone more than another, but you've been so helpful to everyone here with your temp. control work.
I really hope that the tiny minute percent of good outcome so typical in these kinds of cases actually finds you.

Do you have renter's insurance? If so, you're covered.....

If recently purchased, your credit card also covers theft up to a certain amount.

Sorry to hear about your loss!..........

your credit card company should have the insurance to get you a new comp, of course that doesn't replace data. Man that sucks, call everyone you can to make sure it gets known. Good luck
