IBuyPower : NO GO

I got an Ibuypower Battalion S101 Turbo around May. It was a decent laptop, except for:

1] The 8-1 external memory card reader didn't work.
2] The center fan wasn't attached correctly so that the fan would make an irritating rubbing sound every other time I used it. I had to take the bottom of the laptop off and use a knife to shave the fan blades until they weren't in contact with the plastic grate.

I'm in Iraq and don't want to pay to mail this thing back. A friend called ibuypower's customer support line and

3] a guy answers 'Hello, this is Mike'. So my bud is like 'Umm, isn't this a computer company?'. "Mike" says 'Oh uh, hello, this is ibuypower.' And "Mike" is not much help.

Luckily I got a fellow soldier to buy the laptop from me for about 2/3 what I paid. I recommend that people stay away from this company.

well...you screwed with it, so its your fault. you should have called up and requested an RMA to get the fan mounted correctly and to fix the media port. Their RMA department, althought a bit slow, is good about fixing reported problems. Of course now you voided the warranty by shaving your own blade....wtf are you smoking my friend?

Personally I am pretty happy with ibuypower, they have never failed me and met all my requests.

Hey man,

I would have gone the route you suggested but our unit was in the final stages of mobilization for deployment. We were on lock-down at Ft Stewart, then went to Kuwait. Packing the laptop up and mailing it back (I was told that it takes about 6 weeks to get to the US) from IRAQ was not something I was going to wait for.

To clarify: The fan was making those noises before I used tools on it.

I dunno. Perhaps it is just my own personal bias, but when I see a computer that relies on flashy, brightly colored cases as their selling point, it makes me think "What's wrong with the actual laptop?"

kent, paint is optional, i didn't get mine painted, its a stock plastic gray color. There are other companies that paint their laptops (cyberpower, hypersonic, alienware, falcon, voodoo) and there is nothing wrong with their hardware either, its just a nice "add-on" feature

I doesn't matter if it was making noise or not to begin with, opening the case on the laptop voids the waranty. Performing your own fix definitely voids the warranty big time. Unfortunately laptops sometimes come from the manufacturer defective. And you have to play the "Mail-in" game with almost everyone out there.

How do you have so many rep points with two posts??

your going to have this problem with pretty much any company you buy from: alienware, dell, falcon northwood, ibuypower....newegg. Unless there are a lot of complaints, it just means you werent lucky.

No your not going to have this problem with any computer manufacturer, just the ones that sell expensive rigs for the price of a cheap PC. When I see one company selling laptops that are loaded for the price you could barely get a cheap HP for in a retail store I say "something is wrong here". abf who is now kissing theyre ass has about 12 pages of posts about how he had to send his back not once but twice...oh yeah thats quality. Im not buying a PC so I can send it back in for the next 6 months and about fixing problems yourself; shouldnt have to open it up and fix anything if it didnt come broke. If you got 2/3 of your money back you did ok and learned a valuable lesson "you get what you pay for". Im not saying all companies dont have problems but IBP and the other one Cyberpower, I think are just going to naturally be problematic. Take a look around on the web and see what kind of experiences people have had with them, they have as many negative comments as some of the huge companies that sell 10x more PC's. I heard that IBP and Cyberpower are the same company, any [small] company that changes its name obviously has reason to do so. Im not sure theyre the same company but if they are that alone would be reason to take a close look at them.
