Acer 4002WLMI-XPH ($1800CAN)

Or

Acer 4005WLMI($2400CAN)
http://www.acer.ca/acerpanam/page4.d...&crc=399055307

or

http://www.costco.ca/en-CA/Browse/Pr...Path=84*20133*

Ok the differences:
4002 = Is $600 cheaper,

4005= 512mb more ram.
-0.4 more ghz,
-20g more hard drive,
-DVD-Super Multi double-layer drive (4002 has integrated DVD-Dual drive (DVD+/-RW), does that mean it can't do Dual Layer 8.7gb dvd-rs? )
-15.4" WSXGA+ (1680 x 1050) TFT display, and 4002 has 15.4" WXGA (1280 x 800) TFT display.

Ok, My question is, is the 4005 model really worth the $600 more? It seems very iffy. $600 is a lot more money, but if its worth it i'll pay it. You tell me I don't know anything about laptops really... Thanks i'll appreciate any help!

What do you plan on doing with the laptop? For me, I would probabably get the 4005, but that is because it has a higher resolution screen, which is a must for me. However, having the higher resolution screen does mean the text is smaller, and thus harder to read, so if you have poor eyesight, then I don't go for the higher resolution screen. Also, the 4002 has a glossy type of screen, while the 4005 does not. The advantages of the glossy screen is that pictures look crisper and more vibrant on it, but the downfall is that the sun reflects on it more. Also, the differance between 1.6 and 2.0 ghz shouldn't be too noticible, but there will be some differance in speed, mostly during games. About the dvd-burner, I am not quite sure, since Acer words it so crappily. It does say DVD-dual, but that may just mean +/- only. However, Dual-layer dvd's do cost like $10 a piece right now, so it isn't as if they are worth buying.

For me, it mostly comes down to the resolution of the monitors, and whether you can stand the high resolution or not. For me, I am able to tolerate smaller text at the benefit of having more estate to do my work, but then again everyone is different. There have been people in the past who have gotten the WSXGA+ and then complained about it because they did not do enough research to realize that the text would be harder to read. If it were me, I would get the 4005, but you should consider the pros and cons before making a decision.

Well, I'm going to use it for school, games, and movies I'm also going to actually bring it to school for class. I'm probably goign to go to the store and check the resolution and see if its worth it for me to have the higher res. compare the two products.

Thanks pyro

for 600 bucks your getting a much better graphics card and screen. IMO its worth the cash just for the screen. lol

the graphics card is the same - x700. the main difference is the higher resolution of the screen. personally, i quite like 1280x800.

The way I see it, is about as follows:
$100 - 512mb more ram.
$200 -0.4 more ghz,
$80 -20g more hard drive,
$50 – win xp home vs pro
$50 – dual layer drive - i think... it's not too clear on that...
Graphics card is the same

The rest of the difference is in the screen. I think getting glossy on the 4002 is a plus since it is much clearer than the non crystal brite. I have an HP with the glossy and it’s great. Graphics card is the same. Another alternative is getting the travelmate 4402 which looks on the specs to be exactly the same as the 4002 but $300 cheaper and also without the glossy screen.

The travelmate 4402's x700 has only 64mb dedicated memory

I'll probably go with the 4002 cause my parents are going to kill me if i spend anything over 2000. But if its well worth the 600 more then i'll be forced to get the 4005 but if its not really worth the pain then its not wroth getting. I'm mainly going to play Warcraft 3, and possible Battlefield 2, and hopefully some other games in the future. Plus do a lot of school work, surf the net, etc. I might use it for some 2d graphics and some small 3d, and some flash.

I would still go for the 4k2 because of the glossy screen. I don't care about the lower res as I don't have the perfect vision anyway; wsxga+, in my situation, is tiny enough to hurt my eyes. And for usd$1500(ordered from ncix) + $100(another 1gb mem aftermarket), I can get a good looking laptop and run most of the games@native res smoothly with all the details set to med/high. It is a pretty good deal, IMO.

btw, Masakik, the 4002 dvd drive does support DL.
