Replacing burner in DV4000

Anyone know how difficult it is to replace the standard DVD burner (I believe its an NEC) in my DV4000 laptop?

I'd really like to install something that supports DVD-RAM, like an LG 4163B.

thanks guys.

Heres the service manual: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00326470.pdf

Normally there is 1 screw that has to be removed and from there is easy...

That's great, thanks for that.

And I can use any DVD burner in it and use the faceplate from the old drive?

I really need to keep the laptop looking original, thanks again.

Well almost any laptop DVD burner will work... But the bezels often have to be cut and then dont look good...

I recommend going to http://partsurfer.hp.com/ and entering the full model number for the system and then finding the DVD burner that HP sells for it. It will cost over $350 normally so Take the Part number for the DVD burner and put it in froogle.com and try e-bay... You may be able to find one for much cheaper...

Thanks for that.

Looks like HP only have one drive for it:
391743-001, "8X IDE DVD+/-R/RW optical disk drive - Dual layer, dual format (Pavilion) "

I want to keep the laptop looking completely original so dont think I'll upgrade the drive.

thanks again.

If you upgrade to that drive which is listed under your model number (right?) it will look like it does now... Expecpt it will say on the drive that its a DVD+/-R/RW drive...

And it look like you can get it for $179.00 here: http://store.compuvest.biz/607002421-04.html

BTW: Thats a good deal on an HP DVD burner for a laptop... I think the cheapest i can get mine is like $322.00...
