Recommend a Lappy for 10 Year Old - Page 3

Well, I can now see the benefit of going to the mall for a notebook!

What about a Latitude D810 or D610 or an Inspiron 600m?

Get her an old used Latitude CPx. My kids (5 and 4 year old) have two of these sturdy things for almost two years now. They use it mainly to surf kid sites like pbskids.org, barney.com, hotwheels.com, toyrus, etc.. and also wirelessly play their DVD collection from my jukebox (NAS drive) on them. They have dropped these things, spilled stuff on them(just remove the keyboard and wash it with rubbing alcohol then let dry), pounded on them when they get frustrated, even popped off most of the keys from them a few times(I clicked them right back in), yet they still keep on working. Just occasionally blow compressed air through the cooling vent/fan to get rid of dust build-up

I wish there was a Dell Store or kiosk at one of the malls in my area, but there isn't. To see one I'd have to drive an hour southeast of me to a huge mall.

I don't care what anyone says, you are out of your mind...

That's all I'm going to say in this thread - laptop for a 10 year old? My god, and I thought I was spoiled. "Oh daddy, the desktop just won't work for me - it's just too big..." Come on man...

The advice is good in this thread, but then people just give up and start saying, "Hey give her a 2,000 or whatever XPS system or something like that." This is nuts...

That advice is probably going to make you mad but then good advice often does that to people.
Best words in this entire thread.

Thanks for all the great advice I think the 700m is what I am going to go with. For what it is worth...my 10 year old is easily more mature then I was at probably 13 or 14..she has been using my computers since hmm probably 5 or so and there has never been a problem. Of course I don't allow her (or my son) to have any food / drinks nearby...eating is for the kitchen / dining room! To those that think a 10 year old having a laptop is being spoiled....in a sense this is probably the case BUT this is somewhat relative. Actually, my title thread was a little misleading...I should have titled it "Laptop for ME that my 10 year old couse use" The distinction being she WILL be more careful with something she thinks is daddy's rather then hers. As I said earlier in this thread...half the children that are at my house to play show up with either an ipod or a cell phone or both...now none of them have rolled in toting a lappy yet The thing is...I make a very good living...enough to afford another laptop mainly for kiddy use and as long as I continue to see her being responsible, respectiful, polite and well adjusted I am happy to spoil her just a little (although my wife read the comments in here and gave me a big fat "I told ya so) It really depends on the child...in her case the little extras (yes she is aware that she would be a verrrry lucky 10 year old relative to her friends to have a lappy sitting in her room) have to be earned....it is by no means a given. While we don't ask her to do that much...we are fairly strict about getting here "work" done...i.e. homework, room clean, dog fed etc. Miss one of those and bye bye xbox, tv, computer time etc. for that day. But the cautionary statements are well taken and after reading all this I am thinking that her using it in a more supervised way is probably not a bid idea...ie no taking it to friends houses.

My 6 year old son has been using a computer since he was 3, and has had his own Dell 4500 since he was 4. He uses my 9300 sometimes to play WoW or Battlefield 1942.
It's funny when his friends come over and he has to show them how to hold a mouse and move it... It's just beyond me how parents don't look to the future and see the need to get their kids started young.

Start young..playing wow?

I guess you can't get to level 60 fast enough these days. Although this explains the behavior of most of the alliance on my server

..let me guess NE Female rogue.. oh wait that's the 11 yr old staple.

What about the 6000d? I guess the 700m will do okay. The 2200 and 1200 are both junk yards which, as I said before, wont even handle Pinball. What if the Sims 2 doesnt work on the 700m? On the 6000d or 9300 your sure itll run. A 600m will be okay also but it is just SO OLD! If you dont want a 6000d, I second the 700m and I would also suggedt the Latitude D610 with x300 64mb non hypermemory.

Well if you're going to get the 600m, do it now. They're totally re-tooling the look and everything and marketing it as the new XPS M-140.

I got a Dell 400C for my five year old, we travel a lot and she uses it on flights, has had it for a year now with no problems.

She has a few learning games on it and about a week ago worked out how to write her name in WORD, thought that was great. She is responsible with it and I keep an eye on it as well, hell she's only five. I think a laptop for kids is great.

HardD99 et. al., i dont care what you say. A ten year old does not need a laptop. Damn man, use some common sense. When I was ten, I didn't even use computers. Don't spoil your kids; there are way too many kids that are brats and are given eerything. What the hell has happened to society?
