Asus or Acer

Hi,
I'm buying a new notebook to get rid of my old Pentium4 Mobile 2,8GHz. My best options are Asus A6V or Acer 1692WLmi.

Both have Penitum M 740,1024DDRII,80GB HD,ColorShine, ATI Radeon X700. Different graphic card memory: 128 (asus) and 64 (acer)

Based on your own experience, which one do you recommend? My preferences are:

- lowest fan noise possible
- best battery lifetime
- possiblity of undervolting
- does ati's 128MB mean another fan for the GPU?

also, my current notebook cpu temperture keeps at 58/60 degrees Celsius with 2800/3000rpm fan noise... it really, really anoys me... will it be any better with any of the models above?

your opinion would be appreciated
thanks

I own Asus W1N And Acer Ferrari 4005 WLMi,
Build Quality is quite good for an Acer on the Ferrari, but The Asus W1N is not comparable,
cause it's the best build quality notebook i've ever seen , My sister alsohave Powerbook G4 and I can say the asus build quality is on the same league as the Apple, The Acer Ferrari , while is good ad better than normal notebook, but still loses much to Asus,
so get an Asus andu will not dissapointed :P

That's a bit drastic isn't it? I've seen the a6v up close and it's nice but the acer 8104 and Ferrari are very nice machines too.
I have the 8104 and this thing is awesome very rigid and rock solid. Have you even seen an 8104 up close? If anything they're on par with each other. BurtonSnol3orde you kinda sound like a ASUS salesman/fanboy to me.

I would no doubt choose the Asus. I just recently bought my Asus Z70V with 2gb ram, 2GHZ processor and the 802ABG and this thing is hands down the best notebook I have ever used and or owned. Another note is I currently also own an IBMT42 and an HPZD3000 and the Asus's build quality and design, performance, looks blows away the HP and is slighly better than the IBM. The keyboard on the Asus is as good if not better than the IBM and this things performance will handle anything and everthing you throw at it. And on top of it all this thing looks just awsome, its sleek, light and has 4 USB ports unlike the IBMs 2 and the HPs 3....Never know when youll need another spare....And for the price you cant beat the Asus for what you can get, I have 2gb ram, 2ghz processor, abg, 15.4'' monitor that is very nice and the x600 graphics card in this is just fine for me as I dont ever play games. Go with the Asus you cant go wrong...The Acer does look nice but I just cant see myself staring at a ferrarri emblem all day long unless I owned a ferrarri......

tks for all your replies... my current notebook is an Asus, I'm very satisfied with it albeit the fact it's a Pentium 4 Mobile. I know I can trust Asus, but Acer is a bit cheaper... and I've seen others buying Acer with good results. The main reasons I'm switching laptop are battery life and fan noise... I just want the least noise possible!!

Does anyone know if the GPU has a fan in it? I've read some posts where someone said that radeon fans would stay on all the time.

But, I think I'll visit the local store and see for myself both laptops and then choose...

thanks again

acer's are iffy, u may recieve one that is great and never causes u any trouble or u may recieve on thats a wreck from the get go. with asus u're practically guaranteed a great machine.

Build Quality is totally based on the country you purchased. This also relates to Tech Support.

1. I've seen build quality that's crap in Asus. That happens in Taiwan. This might not be true in the US or Europe.
Acer sells most of its laptop in Europe, so you might expect highest quality there. Asia in general just have crap builds because they like to play price war, so all the crap goes to there.

2. Tech support
Acer completely owns Asus on this one. Say if your laptop is doomed regardless which company. Would you like Acer tech support or Asus tech support, I would pick Acer. Asus tech support is virtually a nightmare from the stories I read. 30+ minutes of phone wait is a horrid.

The rest is all up to you.

I don't think manufacturer's put fans on x700's. My dell inspiron 9100 had a fan on its mr9700, but my msi ms-1029 has a x700, and no fan - just a regular heatsink.

Hrm, they don't sell the asus a6v in the us do they?

Go with ASUS. Acer customer service and repair team is the worst ever. If anything goes wrong with your laptop, you might risk the chance of getting an abused laptop returned to you from Acer. This is from experience. I had to return 8104 and type a 3-5 page paper to argue my point that my laptop was abused by the repair team. That itself did not do enough. THey refused my full refund. I called up my reseller and told them the situation and told me if nothing is resolved, i will have to take it up with BBB (Better Business Bureau). Finally, they gave me a full refund.

I'm in Portugal (Europe), and the A6V I'm talking about is this one http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?l...32&modelmenu=1

thank you all for your replies... I just found a store selling Asus for the same price as the Acer one, so I guess I'll go with Asus

thanks

How ABout Me?
I own Both TopEnd Model From Both of the Company,
And Even though my Acer ferrari is only a few days old, but still my ASUS W1N built quality is superior,
The Ferrari fell good also though, compared to my friends 8104.

Should I then expect lower quality from Asus if I purchase in Taiwan, as compared to purchasing in the United States?

Defentaly ASUS. I owned a couple Acers and they where in no way as good as the build of an ASUS. Also ASUS used to make the Apple iBook from what I remmeber (correct me if I am wrong) and Apple has the best build quailty of any notebook on the market. Don't get Acer you will be unhappy thats what happened to me not to long ago I sold my Acer Ferrari to get an ASUS

No. Ensemble units are all built and assembled in Taiwan, then shipped off to wherever the final destination is. It doesn't matter where you buy it, it's still the same quality.

I purchased an Asus W5f with an upgraded processor (T2600 2.16 ghz), 100 GB 7200 rpm hard drive and 2x512 mb RAM and it absolutely flies. Love the build quality and is about as solid a piece of mobile equiptment as I have come across. Had some problems with McAfee Internet Secuirty Suite-Wireless Network Edition and had to wipe my notebook clean and start fresh and it is better than new now. Asus all the way.
