HELP - I keep getting a BSOD!

Hi. I hope someone here can help me out.

I keep getting this blue screen of death. I don't know what is causing it and I don't know how to fix it. I happens randomly while surfing the web.

I just did a clean install of windows. The only thing installed is my firewall (outpost) and my antivirus (fprot).

I don't know what to do.

I am using Windows XP Pro on a 3Ghz P4 with 1GB ram.

Please, if anyone knows what this BSOD means or how to fix it, let me know.

I'd appreciate any help.

Here is a picture I took of the BSOD: (click to enlarge)

You have a driver issue. Probably corrupted. Did you recently upgrade or install a piece of hardware?

Post the minidump and I will be happy to analyze it if you like.

i'd be glad if you could help me, but I don't know how to get to the minidump

can you teach me?

it's a really strange problem because it's totally random.

I can go a whole week without a crash. Then there are days when it happens a number of times... strange.

look in %SystemRoot%\Minidump where system root is either windows or winnt directory. should be a 64k file with no extension if I f I remember correctly. The name will be minidump. I just did a quick google and afd.sys is part of the tcp/ip stack might try reloading the networking portion of windows. Good luck

Where bsmith said assuming no one has gone in and changed it. Obviously some options have been changed on the minidump page or you wouldn't even be seeing the BSOD. By default, the option on the minidump page is set to restart the computer upon critical error. Hopefully whoever changed the option of auto restart didn't change the minidump location or completely disable it.

Check system properties>advanced>startup and recovery. Near the bottom of that window should be minidump parameter and location info. Default is small memory dump (64k) in the location bsmith referred to. That should be C:\Windows\minidump. You will have a seperate minidump for each time you had the problem, named by date.

Thunder_PC, check your PM

btw, keep in mind that this dumpfile dated 9/15/2005 is the only file I had in the minidump folder. The last time I saw the BSOD was on the 13th or 14th though...

The reason you didn't see anything could possibly be because notification of critical errors is turned off. The minidump you sent echoed the same afd.sys file. It is used to support Windows sockets apps. First step to repair a system file like that may be to go to start>run then type "sfc /scannow" (without quotes) and press enter. You may also want to make sure all your network drivers are up to date.
