Ubuntu Breezy Preivew....greatest thing since sliced bread

Hi people!

I am sure most of you already know that I am a HUGE fan of Ubuntu linux, I've been an on-and-off user since 4.10 Warty Warthog. I am sure that some of my great raves about it got some of you to try Ubuntu.

Anyway, I installed Breezy Badger Preview on my Uniwill last night and boom! OMG..Ubuntu has done it again

all my hardware (yes, even the wifi) still works right out of the box, so all i have to do is type in my wep key and install fglrx and i am good to go

I love what they did with the file browser, the new version is much more user friendly than the older one (say 5.04 it looked a lot like Mac OS 9, 5.10 is more modern Windows Explorer-like browser). The bootslpash is a nice touch (although it doesn't work on shut down for some reason )

Overall, some fat has been trimmed, some nice muscle has been added on and overall i think it is THE DISTRO to try for total linux noobs, and experts alike.

Some other distros on my watchlist:
Onebase, Foresight, Vector, PC-BSD

Sweet! so I guess you didn't do the distro upgrade? I have a backup script that I wrote that basically tar's my whole system. When Breezy Badger comes out in october I'll do the backup then try and run the distro update.

The only thing I really want is the new version of gnome, tho. I'm terrified that all of my dev work will break. I have to run certain versions of java sdk, tomcat, msql and apache.

I switched to ubuntu from winxp about a month ago and haven't had one crash or forced reset yet... I'm in heaven.

i did try dist-upgrade at first, but it killed my x. so i just burned the iso and ran from there.

Heh Im downloading the preview release now to install on a spare partition just to try things out on it, the last one did odd things on my server, but well see what happens.

Still think Ubuntu is one of the easiest and better distros out there.

i am new to linux but i have downloaded it and burned it onto a cd. i just need to partition a my hd. what is the best free prgram to do this?
If you're installing ubuntu, it includes a partitioner in the installation. When it gets to the partitioning part, choose "manually partition", select the partition you need to make smaller, and press enter. Then select the "size" part, press enter, and put in the new size you want. This will leave you with unformatted space that you can install linux on (just tell it to automatically format it).

oh cool so i dont even need another program

So, if i go to the preview edition, how easy is it going to be for updating to the final verison? Also, being "preview", should i expect lots of flaws if i start using it?

preview is pretty stable. its Colony 1 2 and 3 that were the "testing" versions. You can use apt-get to keep current for when the final version comes about next month.

but is it an easy upgrade from preview to final?

To go from Preview ---> Final

Step 1: Open terminal

Step 2:
Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Step 3: Grab a cookie and go watch some tv, the rest will take care of itself

does that sound like hard work?

What's the difference between the currently linked preview release for 5.10 and the colony 5 release linked on distrowatch? I'm going to throw ubunto on a new laptop coming in the mail and I'd like to put one or the other on it now and apt upgrade to 5.10 official once it's released.

...i believe Preview is Colony 4, so Colony 5 is the latest pre-release cornerstone. The final version should be comming out within 2 weeks or so, wait for the final if you can.
Yeah, I can't wait because I'm anxious like that. I'll just upgrade and cross my fingers (which shouldn't be taking much of a chance anyway... not much can change in two weeks).

i'll wait till the final version comes out, i tried breezy and it wasn't very stable on my pc. for now i have hoary runnig perfectly, so i don't want to mess with it.

Yeah, this Breezy Preview (actually colony cd 5) is godly -> my cl56 actually comes out of sleep. I have spend over a year trying to accomplish this and the uber ubuntu guys just fixed it for me. Also the new gnome is pretty cool. Everything is nicely organised and just feels more robust.
