D810: quieter than 9300 or D600?

Hey there, new here!

I've been looking for a replacement for my Dell Latitude D600, and earlier this month I received the Inspiron 9300- which I personally found just a LITTLE on the large size (personal preference), and definitely louder (fan noise) versus my old D600.

I just ordered the Latitude D810 instead, with the 7200 RPM 60gig HD (decided to stay with the Latitude family.) I notice the D810 also has what appears to be two fans as well, like the 9300.

I did a search, and could not find any complaints about D810 noise. Then on the other hand, I could not find any either about the 9300's constant fan noise, although it bothers me.

Can anyone who has heard the D810/9300 or even the older D600 know if the D810 is any quieter? I was really happy with the relative silence of the D600, and I'm hoping the D810 is as well.

Thanks!

I dont own a D810, but heres what I know:
D810 probably runs hotter than 9300 but,
D810 will probably be quieter.

Hm.

I was just reading this review of the Precision M70:
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=2302

I know the M70 appears identical to the D810, with different innards (beefier video card on M70, for one thing) and slightly different CPU options... I'm intrigued that the reviewer for the M70 said "Super-quiet operation---virtually no fan noise."

Is it safe to say that the D810 also runs "super quiet" as well? Anyone got a D810 testify to this?

EDIT:
I just found this commentary here (link):

Quote:
Fan - For the duration of 80% of our testing, the notebook was almost completely quiet, but the fans didn't seem to be spinning during these test segments. Other than the click of the hard drive read/write head, which seemed a bit louder for this notebook than others, the D810 didn't emit any other noises. Keep in mind that we don't just do performance testing, we also do a lot of field and usability testing.

We had to isolate the volume of the D810 differently than we did with other notebooks, because unlike most notebooks, the fans don't start spinning once you hit the system on button. We got a read on the D810's fans by putting the CPU and GPU to full load during game play (we played the entire level 1 from Halo). At that point, the variable speed fans came on to cool the heatsinks; within a few minutes of quitting the game, the fans shut down. It seems that it takes something more serious than e-mail, browsing, word processing, etc. to get the fans to turn on. In this scenario, the max volume of the fans is loud enough to hear in a quiet room, cubicle, or library. You won't have to lean in close to hear the fan, it is audible enough to hear sitting in normal computer posture. The click of the hard drive was just about as loud, while the sound to access a CD/DVD was definitely louder.
This sound exactly like my D600: The fan DOES move, but so slowly during idle that it doesn't even sound like it's on. Turn on a game and the fan spins faster, and is noticable. But it does indeed go away after you quit whatever CPU-intensive application you're running.

Fingers crossed guys.

Any D810 owners want to chime in? Does this sound like an accurate description?

We have a D810 and I own an M70 (same thing but a bit hotter). Both the D810 and M70 are very quite. Much quieter than the D600.

cjcox,

Quieter than the D600? Wow.

Last night I boxed up the 9300 (bye bye!) and was back to using my older D600 as I wait for my new D810 to arrive. What a difference! Even when the D600's fan turned on under CPU-demanding tasks, I wasn't the least bit disturbed.

If you say the D810/M70's are "much quieter" than the D600, then that's good news. Can't wait!

dell m70 is quiter than the d810 as it has a thicker chasis allowing it to heat up more. My firned has the d810 and his fan is just a tad louder than mine but then again mine is undervolted.

Question on D810/M70 Fan Sounds, how does the sound of the GPU Fan compare to that of the CPU Fan?

I too own the D810 and it's one of the quietest laptops out there... Even the OEM HDD that came with it doesn't make any noises.

The 9300 isnt loud at all, no different from the D810. Ive used both and have the 9300, not sure where you get that the 9300 is loud? No owner of the 9300 has ever said this. You must have superhuman hearing

I cant imagine why anyone would pack up a 9300 for a D810, the d810 has lousy video card, perhaps your harddrive is noisy? a 7200 drive maybe?
If your going to shell out that kind of cash for the D810, I would go with the M70 instead as it does at least have a decen video card.

Hold on here, so you're telling me that my D810 with 128MB X600 is lousy? I really don't think it's the worst video card out there... I've seen some of your thread posts... you need to keep some of your opinons to yourself.

Btw, my friend owns the 9300, it is mildly louder than the D810. My friend and I placed both notebooks side by side and you can hear small difference in loudness but it's not too drastic. Cutters does have a point with the 7200RPM drive... it can be loud as the rotation on the drive can cause more noise.

Forums are not for keeping ones opinions to ones self. Compared to the 9300's 6800 go card, the x600 doesnt look soo good, it isnt the worst video card out there, its the second worst, the first would be that ati x300 card.
Im picturing you and your friend right now holding your laptops up to your ears to see how much noise they make and its making me giggle. Im sure im not the only one scratching my head on that one.......turning in a 9300 for the d810 and you want to game? <scratch scratch> The 9300 is too noisy? < scratch, scratch>. Maybe you got a defective machine or perhaps listening to it after some gaming?? I dunno but to each his own.
Dont get me wrong, the D810 is just fine for the middle aged corporate type for business use. But it wasnt designed for mainstream home use/multimedia, it still has many legacy ports.

No mention of Gaming on any of WirelessAndy's posts. For what I see that he said, I would expect that the D810 x600 would suit him better than any Inspiron, if Gaming were high on his list as a secondary use, then the M70 would do a better job at that, while still remaining on the Latitude side of design.

Opinions should be heard, 'flames' and personal attacks should not.

Ever since the first Inspiron replaced the Latitude LM, Dell has been very clear on the differential properties of the lines.

My choice of the 'LM' ("Multimedia System") over the only other Dell, the 'XPi' ("Network designed") had been that the XPi still used the TrackBall that I had hated so much on the IBM and the LM had that cutting-edge TouchPad that I grew to love.

Most Dell users need to strike the balance and have one portable that best covers their priorities and for some of us, the Latitude fills the bill.

Computer gaming for me (since I got bored with 'Pong' and was too old to like 'Pac-Man') has been limited to 'playing' FlightSafety's Aircraft Simulators. Now THERE is a purpose designed, one game computer that fills several rooms and needs a Tech on site to keep it tuned, but What'a-Ride it can offer. Difficult to keep a mind-set to enjoy it, since every flight is guaranteed to be full of horrific scenarios to deal with, but it is SO Important to practice that art.

That being said, I come here to Get Opinions and there is no other group of folks that approach the general computing knowledge and expertise of the 'Gamers'

I have to agree with you on coming here to get opinions as there's alot to be learned here especially if you are getting your first lappy. Whether wireless andy was getting a system for gaming or not I overlooked but unless you are using a latitude in the corporate world, the extra money and less performance on the graphics side doesnt make sense with the D810.
Gamers do have alot of useful tips however I would temper that advice with a knowledge of their age as often extreme gamers are out to overclock, undervolt, pinmod and fan tweak to the brink of frying their systems in the name of a little extra performance.
