Just Ordered Amilo

Thread Starter
Well after weeks and weeks of searching for a laptop I finally bit the bullet today and bought an Amilo M 3438G, should be with me tomorrow morning...

My requirements where mainly the following...
Oracle work (Will be running 8i, 9i & 10g)
Programming
Web Design (Dreamweaver, Photoshop etc...)
Gaming (I tend to lean towards games like Age Of Empires although I do play Call of Duty online)
Linux (If I can get a decent distro installed on it)

I was initially going for the Dell I9300 but for the same spec as the M3438G is was gonna cost a lot more plus I was worried about the light leakage and 'sparkle' effect issue on the screens.

The only issue I have come across for the M3438G is the 'heat' one.
But, after trawling various forums, its seems that the I9300 runs at similar temps so that sold it for me. I will just remember to keep it dust free as I believe this acts as an insulator and raises temps.

Anyway, the spec I got...

Intel Pentium-M Centrino 2GHz
1GB RAM
2x60GB S.A.T.A Drives (RAID) - (Will be excellent for Oracle work!!!)
17" XGA Screen
NVIDIA GeForce Go 6800 256MB
etc.
etc.

Well, my visa card is £1170 lighter but cant wait to get it

Look foward to shaing info with you all

Bought the exact same config from ld, but mine came today

I love it! Ive read about the temp issues, but I dont seem to be having any, my gfx idles at 63, and rises to 70 under load, this is with dual hd config, so all good.

The processor comes reasonably close to my FX-51 in my PC, so thats great, the GFX while not amazing, certainly handles todays games with little trouble.

My only gripes really are the size, but its actually lighter than expected, and did u know they include a bag? Albeit a poor one, but still what a nice suprise!

Also like someone else said the FN key is placed badly for gamers, and where u rests your hands gets a little warm, but other than those, shes a beaut!

I got mine from laptops direct also and asked if they included the bag and i was told no... I was also told that I would have to pay money for software, as no software was included as a bundle...

I bought another bag from ebay as a result and luckilly did not pay extra for software that was included...

Otherwise the laptop in itself is very good.

Got mine from Laptops Direct and my box had the laptop bag included in the bottom - nice enough bag but no extra pockets and cubby holes for other bits like mPacks and PSP's

I also bought a 3438G (or was it 4438 not sure..) yesterday.
Mine will have 2x120 and a external 250GB. I probably wont have it until November though

Hi, where did you get the 2 x 120Gb version from? Are they still 5400rpm?

I do a lot of high-spec music and video editing and would possibly need larger drives in the future (purely for convenience mind you, as I do have large and fast external drives too)

Well its what we in Sweden call a "home pc" offer. In (very) short you can hire a pc for 3 year and then decide if you want to return it or buy it. The bennefits with this deal it that you can make tax deductions so you basicly pay less that you would if you bought it in a store. Why do I tell you this? Beacuse since this is a "special" offer I don't know if you can buy this specification elsewhere (you probably can) and I dont know the specification on the drives but I doubt it will be 7200.
