Time for a "newer" video card, suggestions? - Page 2

We are going in circles We can run on all kind of tangents to make excuses, but my original statement is still valid.

That is the Ultra ... he was inquiring about the 6800GT. Two 6800GT's in SLI do not perform to the GTX standard.
Playable and desired are two completely different things. I have never said (and would never say) that two 6800GTs or Ultras are bad. Either would be a great setup. But even your own replies (in disagreement?) have enforced my statement. All I was trying to do is correct the statement of

While true that two 6800 Ultras are faster in some games at lower resolutions (or whatever you want to call below 1280x1024 and below), it is false that they are faster at higher resolutions (where the GPU has to work), and false that they are consistently faster.

Edit: A link to a review on early 7800GTX compared to OC 6800 Ultra SIngle and SLI. 1024x768 and 1600x1200. The results are consistent with most others I have seen showing a single GTX to be superior to SLI 6800Ultras:http://graphics.tomshardware.com/gra...622/index.html

Well, Chris came back with this to say:

But I ran it like 4 times and kept getting the same numbers. Puzzling:

He also ran some quick tests on other games as well, but not to the extent as he did with NFSU2, only at 1600x1200 4xAA8xAF:

NFSU2:6800GT SLI < 7800GTX
Far Cry:6800GT SLI = 7800GTX
Far Cry HDR: 6800GT SLI < 7800GTX
SCCT: 6800GT SLI > 7800GTX
Everquest2: 6800GT SLI = 7800GTX
WoW: 6800GT SLI < 7800GTX
Half Life 2: 6800GT SLI = 7800GTX
Lego Star Wars: 6800GT SLI > 7800GTX
BF2: 6800GT SLI = 7800GTX

6800GT SLI = 2 instances w/ higher fps
7800GTX single = 3 instances w/ higher fps
But 4 instances where they were equal

So....Eh. We're quiggling about 5-10% when up to 1600x1200 (although minimums were about the same).

Bottom line: Since the thread starter is only buying one card, he should get the best card he can afford. If he has $300+, he should aim for the 78xx series.

Gotta get a little excitement somewhere to perk up the day

Thread Starter
Thanks for the info all. I'm wondering, since I have been using a laptop for gaming with an ATI Radeon M 9600 video card for the past few years, perhaps I can hold off on the 7800 GT and just get the 6800 GT. My guess is I'll see leaps and bounds in the improvements from gaming on my laptop over the desktop with a 6800 GT.

I'm not sure if I'll regret it later on, but I may skip the whole SLI idea, and go with the ASUS board with one 16x pci-e slot. Then get the 6800 GT card over the 7800 GT card, and save myself 130$ or so. I'm thinking that will run the games fast enough for a few years. (I'm guessing anyway) ... especially if I end up getting a 19" lcd monitor that only supports 1280 x 1024 resolution.

Does this seem like a fair assessment, or should I continue to save for another month to get that extra performance from the 7800 GT and the higher resolution monitor?

To add, here are the "newer" games I'm planning on running:
Half Life 2
Far Cry
World of Warcraft
Age of Empires 3
City of Villians / City of Heroes
Battle for Middle Earth

The thing that is making me upgrade is the poor performance I get from Battle for Middle Earth and City of Heroes. City of Heroes runs really poorly on my laptop, even with every sitting to a minimum.

Well, if you can put out 350 for a card, you can get the 7800GT:
