slow cd/dvd burning

Anyone know why i cant burn CDs any faster than 12x or DVDs more than 4x? isnt the burner supposed to be 24x/8x?

Depends on the configuration u ordered I think. Also, check the manufactures' respective websites for the "real" specs (mine 9880 has the Toshiba lightscribe in it and I know I've been to their site and seen the specs there for it.)

did u check the media u r using? if u r using cds that r rated for 12x the system will write at 12x and not 24x same for dvd.

Without knowing which device you are talking about, it is hard to tell. There are different specifications for READ/WRITE/REWRITE. Also the media that you are using may or may not be "friendly" to the device used to write them. Please let us know what the actual device and media are.

Toshiba cd/dvdw sc-r6472, e3 works CD-R media
media works fine in other system

Toshiba drives are very very sensitive to the media. Even thought the E3 Works media may work well with other equipment, it does not mean that it will work well or even at all with the Toshiba drive. This goes for both DVD and CD media.

where can i find out which will work with my drive? and are there any cheap alternatives? i cant justify to myself spending more than the 5 cents a disc ive been paying for the last 4 years...

Try doing a google search on the drive and then try wading through some of that.
