Can I use recovery media to install Windows XP?

Hi, Guys.

This might sound a little naive.
Is it possible to use a recovery media for a desktop to install Windows XP Home Ed. on a notebook? Is it legal? Would it make me a bad guy? Does the God forgive such sins, eventually?

If it is a recovery disk and not an OEM XP disk, then it is likely not legal. It most likely includes software intended for use solely on the machine it was included with. It wouldalso not be legal unless you changed the key to a different one that was not being otherwise used on another PC. Besides that, most restores are simply an image of the machine as it was when you got it. This means the install wouldn't work properly anyway (different drivers, IRQ mapping, etc). It's would be like swapping to a completely different board/processor combo and leaving the same HD intact without reinstalling Windows fresh. It may work (most likely not), but would certainly not be optimal.
