Is 2 GB RAM overkill? How much should i Buy?

Hi all,
My XPS 2 order is in and I have taken the advice given by many people to buy the minimum 2 x 256 sticks of RAM from dell cos they charge silly prices for an upgrade. Im going to order RAM in the next couple of days and would value any input you lot can give me as to whether 2GB is really necessary. I read PC Zone for games info and the techie guy in the magazine says that 1GB is the max you need for games these days, 2GB is overkill unless you are video editing. Has anyone out there upgraded from 1GB to 2GB? What difference does it make speed wise? I will be using the XPS 2 almost solely for gaming. Im a complete EQ2 addict and Im gonna buy BF2 for a bit of FPS action.
We are talking £100 difference in 1GB or 2GB so is it worth it? Is there a middle ground?
Thanks in advance

For games that run large textures....I HIGHLY recommend the 2GB. Large texture games (i.e. Battlefield 2, Guild Wars, WoW, etc) will always take advantage of the texture and the load...

Here in the US the price on RAM is cheaper, and as such I purchased the 2GB's, as I do photo editing, but I would still go with at least a 1GB stick then upgrade to 2GB's later... Just make sure to buy the same memory when upgrading.

You could buy one 1gig stick now and keep one of your current ones, you'll see 1.2gigs, which is plenty for lots of stuff.

However, I believe that we'll all eventually end up with 2gigs in the machine. If you buy them both now you more immediatelly recover the value of your 256meg sodimms whose price I believe will fall more quickly than the 1gig sticks..

I just went through this myself and newegg's allegedly sent 2gigs on their way to me.

2 Gigs, all the way

I purchased an XPS2 for my main graphic arts workstation. I do a lot of work on the road and it just blazes.

I did upgrade through new egg to 2gigs, and the comptuer has been perfect.

I recommend it highly.

I noticed a significant difference in WoW when I upgraded from 1GB to 2GB. Since then I've played other large games and they all load and run very smoothly. Most will alt-tab to the desktop and back with very little, if any, lag at all.

2GB then. I noticed a significant difference in EQ2 and BF2 going from 1 to 2, especially in city zones for EQ2.

yah, 2GB is just unbelievable. But, as stated, you dont have to go all at once if you dont want to spend that much money.

You'll want 2GB of RAM when Windows Vista is released next year. Future games and OS platforms will require significantly more RAM than previous software.

Not worth it to list and sell. You wont get that much anyways and besides..If you do what most of us have done and order cheaper ram...At least hang on to it till you RMa your first order and recieve the second good order of ram....

If you sell the RAM your XPS 2 comes with then you'll have to give up the new RAM you buy if you ever decide to sell it later on in a year or two. If you just keep the RAM then you can install the old RAM back in when you want to sell it and upgrade.

It is obvious that people will disagree on the necessary amount of RAM for one's computer. Personally, I opted to order my 9300 with the smallest amount of RAM and immediately headed to Newegg.com where I purchased two 1-gig sticks for my laptop. For 200 bucks total, not only can you save a ton over dell's prices, but you will be equipped well into the future as well.
