Sager NP3880 vs. Asus z70va vs. MSI 1029

Hello all!

I just stumbled onto the forum yesterday and after hours upon hours of reading and rereading I have been blown away by the quality of feedback and sheer amount of information that it has to offer.

First off, this will be my first laptop ever. I have been building desktops for as long as I can remember...but I am entering my 3rd year of college and I really need the portability of a laptop going back and forth from campus and my apartment.

At first I was looking dell inspirons...but soon after finding this forum I discovered I can do much much better.

Of the three laptops...from what I have read...any of them will make me a very very happy man. I just want to make the best choice possible

Each of these three laptops seem to have their own individual issues:

Sager 3880: I've heard it has some heating issues. Also it weighs 8pounds which is a little heavy for me (when you include the adaptor etc). The video card is not upgradeable (I dont mind that so much)

Asus z70va: All the talk about a noisy fan does make me a little worried. This is a powerful laptop and if it needs to cool itself down...I understand. I am new to laptops...so I figure I will be too distracted by how awesome it is. I just dont there to be something inherently wrong with the machine. I am having a little trouble finding resellers for this thing.

MSI 1029: This thing looks awesome for the price. I guess the screen isnt as high of a quality as the other too. It does have the 64bit processor which is cool. Not quite as cool looking as the asus.

So yeah, any help deciding between these three is greatly appreciated. Since this is my first venture into these brands of laptops I am a little concerned about reliability and what I should do regarding warranties. One factor that I am having trouble getting info about is battery life...I am not sure which is best in that regard. I'd like to get 3 1/2 to 4 hours.

Thanks!

I own the asus z70va so I may be a bit biased.
The Sager from what I understand is heavier, and the screen is pretty poor quality. It has a 256 meg x700 so I imagine it would run games a bit faster, especially very memory intensive games. I dont think it would be a huge difference though, I think it gets like 150-200 more on 3dmark 05.
The MSI is a good choice if you want the turion. I think everything else is the same.
The Refresh is what I decided on, as I liked the screen a lot, the keyboard is very comfortable and similar to a desktop keyboard. The build quality is quite excellent. As far as the noise, I barely notice it, sure theres a fan, and its audible. But its not loud by any means, its fairly quiet by my standards. The laptop's bottom can get a bit warm if used under full power.

The MSI MS-1029 will probably not get you 3.5-4 hours on normal usage (you'll have to turn screen brightness down to the floor, maybe turn of Wi-Fi, etc)

I don't know about the screen quality being worse per se, it just has a lower maximum resolution and a glossy screen. The build quality is decent.

the sager 3880 uses the 128mb 6600go and its screen is just fine. u can either go for the glossy wxga or matte wsxga. the only downside to it is its weight.

the sager screen on the 3880 is very nice, and wuxga is awsome too... its got a 128mb go6600 and is a very well built and good machine.

Awesome, this helps a lot.

What do you guys recommend/suggest for a warranty? Is a the 1yr ok?

Also, how heavy is the asus z70va?
The Z70va is like 6lbs, but its slim so its easy to carry around (for me). The screen is beatifull, the battery life is great, graphic card is awsome, and its looke sooo damn sexy Im 100% sure you will ike it and I would not change it for anything

Sheesh...when you put it that way what more is there to say? I think I've made up my mind.

Is it true there is a student discount? If so, how does that work?

thanks!

When I was ordering the Z70va from ISTNC, they didnt have the student discount available.

they're all pretty good choices. However due to the battery of the Sager, it's heavier and got a larger over all dimension.. I think you should narrow it down to the Asus or MSI.. on one hand.. you have a Pentium M with a higher res matte screen, the other, an AMD Turion with a lower res, but glossy screen. Both Asus and MSI are popular brands and usually receive positive reviews. You can't go wrong with either.

I just got my z70va a couple days ago, so I'm biased too. But about the fan noise issue. To me you can hardly call it an issue. I don't even notice the fan at all anymore. So I wouldn't worry about that. The fan will be just as loud on any other laptop of this caliber.

I got mine from istnc and couldn't be happier with the service and the product.

I'm sure you will be happy with any of those options, but I'd go for the z70va.

I would highly recomend the Asus as I own one and its hands down the best notebook I have ever used. I also have an IBMt42 and an HPZD3000 and the Asus is a much better machine. IT looks awsome and you cant beat the price for what you get. I have no noise issues whatsoever and actually my notebook is very quite. Ive had this notebook for about 2 months now and I can not find one single thing to complain about. Its light, sleek, looks nice and the performance is outstanding. I would go with the Asus, you really cant go wrong. I also got a one year accidental damage plan for 100$ which could be very beneficial.....
