I service computers for a living but this one has me stumped. Here goes:
It came into my shop with a BSOD (blue screen of death) that pops up before windows XP Home Edition boots all the way. It happened every time the bars going left and right were ready to stop and say "welcome to windows". Well, I used the 3 original recovery disks (mint condition) and reloaded the software. The same problem happens again and again.
I formatted the drive and loaded WinXP Home Edition using another brand OEM Disk and it worked, BUT I can't get the sound or modem to work. I am 100% sure I downloaded and installed the correct drivers (from Toshiba's website). The sound gives a Code 10 error (cannot start). The modem drivers went in smoothly but I get a port error during self-test. Changing ports does not work.
After a week of pulling my hair out, I decided there must be a cracked pc board or burned out modem/sound IC, and the customer said he would buy an external USB Modem. I installed the USB modem driver and everything was now working (except no sound). The customer will buy external USB Speakers if needed.
The customer took the laptop home and couldn't get it to power on. He brought it back and when the power button is pressed (power adapter plugged in), the lights all blink off and stay off. The laptop is now dead. Unplugging and reconnecting the adapter starts the sequence all over again. After hitting numerous key combinations, I managed to get it powered on again. He took it home and it's dead again. (note: the battery and AC Adapter are both OK)
Is there a key combination that brings this back to life again ?
Thanks in advance for any assistance
