You can easily see if it's the game or the laptop problem by running video benchmarks and other games and seeing if it locks up. If it doesn't lock up, it's the game or driver issues with the game. You can try and reinstall video drivers and the game.

the patch works fine on a desktop, ive tested it. but obviously the laptop variant is not responding the same way. since the patch is essentially a beta version of the 3.10's (or 4's if they go that way with the naming) , ide guess it will work fine when the final 3.10's are released.

i have been to ATI site and they say to turn the AGP to 4x and not 8x
by
To work around this issue, set AGP transfer mode to AGP 4X. Steps are provided below:
Go to Display Properties > Settings > click Advanced button
Select the SMARTGART tab
Set the AGP Speed to 4X
Apply the settings change
Restart the system

i have not got a smartgart tab ???
i am using the drivers off the cd we got with our lappys..

do u guys have this option on ur ATI 9600 ??

Not all desktops. A very savvy user/friend of mine has it and his 9700pro still crashes, after the patch.

I think nVidia just paid them to make it break ATI drivers...

It's the drivers alright! I tried all the above to try to stop the locks ups- the only thing that stopped them completely was I had to go back to the Sager 7.93 video drivers on the cd that came with the 8890. They are not as good as the 3.9 or (pre-3.10) Do the manufactures test these games before they put them in the stores? or Money first - patch later

I've been running COD flawlessly on my 8890 with no patch. Didnt even know their was one out. Is it possible for it to run better than it is or if it aint broke dont fix it?

Nandro
If your running the 7.93 drivers that came with your 8890 you don't need patch, which is pre-3.10 drivers. Some say the patch still doesn't work on all computers. I would stay with what you have.

Just what drivers are you using? I had the same problem with the Cat 3.8/3.9 drivers. They don't support COD or the other way around. Right now i am running the game flawlessly with just the sager 7.93 updated patch. You have to uninstall EVERYTHING about ATI in the Add/Remove Programs n the control panel. Then reboot. Copy the 7.93 folder from the Drivers CD to the C: and then take the files you downloaded from sagers website (ie the patch) and copy them over the files that are in the C:\7.93\ ... \ folder, and then run Setup.exe from your hdd. This worked for me. If my instructions completely suck, read the readme that is included with the 7.93 patch you DLed from Sagernotebook.com.

Hope you get it working. Happy gaming to you!

hi i am using the drivers off the cd but will get the update from sager site..
are these the ones ??

ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 Driver for Windows 2000, XP (Version 7.93 WHQL) ?
thats whats on sagers site

the 7.93 are the ones on the cd but are not WHQL...
but i will try it now and see what happens..

i have noticed that the people with HT enabled are having probs..
could this be it ???

I have a 8890V with the 3.2 chip with HT turned on...

Get the WHQL 7.93s off Sager's site ('bout 60MB) and forget about it.

Yeah... make sure you uninstall the old drivers completely.

Not to start a flame war; but it's threads like this that make me love the stability of my NVIDIA that allows me to play games like CoD flawlessly
post #16 of 28
IMO it's a tradeoff, nvidia has great driver support (including cross platform), but in the mobile world ati's have a fairly decent speed advantage. And, when buying a sager, it's someting of a non-issue, ATI is the only option.

btw, mmarkin (hopefully that's right) I think he did mean M8 as in 'mate'.
Yeah..as I mentioned in a different thead there's definately the apparent opportunity cost:

NVIDIA = more stability but less performance
ATI = more performance but less stability

Probably

Yeah, the whole thing about nVIDIA being good with drivers but lacking a bit in the mobile world is true, IMO.

Meanwhile, I never had any trouble with CoD because I had the 7.93s off Sager's site, unlike people who just HAD to get the new ones.

Call of Duty lockup

Tess, this is bout your original post. Call of Duty, I have been told, is run under OpenGL. In all my time using ati cards i have know them to have capatibility to run gl (sometimes stable sometimes not) but has always be geared toward DirectX applications. but in this case all is not lost Scitech, an ati official driver development partner... herm, makes an ingenious little app known as GLDirect (http://www.scitechsoft.com/products/ent/gld_home.php) its a trial version but hey, we can't all live in a world of open source. =P I'll know for certain if this works this weekend when my buddy tries it on his puter till then I hope this helps.

btw. Element doen't have a problem running it because he uses a card that started its way into the market with OpenGL, Lucky bas.. son of a gun.
