Review: Seppuku's z70va “refresh” Review - Page 2

Has anyone else factored in that the z71v has nVidia's MXM slot - the sole attempt to provide video upgradability on notebooks? The z70v/va lacks this feature and what you get is what youre stuck with. At least with the z71v there is the possibility of a video upgrade should 1 become available.

The key word there is "attempt". just because there is a slot to accept an new video card doesn't mean that the chassis will be able to accomodate it either physically or thermally.

The video card on the Z71v is made by Asus (GPU by Nvidia), and Asus is not planning on releasing any upgrades. At the moment, upgrading video cards in notebooks is still more dream than reality.

There is one really good thing about having a removable card, even if they never make a new card to upgrade. If for any reason the card fails, either from overclocking, or general usage, you can just buy a new card and replace it. That alone is a bonus in my book, especially since I overclock my z71v 6600. There is also the possibility (though remote) of a second or third party making a card, or even someone figuring a way to put some other notebook manufacturers card in.

I do think having the card soldered into the motherboard is a con.

Some hard numbers would be preferable please (benchmarks, fps numbers in specific games), instead of just subjective evaluation.
In the normal Asus forum they have a sticky thread at the top with a comparisons of the various Asus laptops.
http://www.notebookforum.ca/phpbb2/docs/Benchmark.htm
The top 2 listed there are the Z70va and Z71v. quick comparison w/3dmark 05, the X700 = 2400 and the 6600 = 1700.

The SATA is not better in this case just because:

2.5-inch ultra-slim 9.5mm SATA / PATA HDD, capacities of 20/40/60/80GB at 4200/5400/7200 RPM
* SATA achieved thru PATA controller
That's off of Asus' website. That's basically saying that you can use an SATA drive in the Z71V through an adapter, but it'd be practically pointless because then you have a 150 MB/s max drive hooked up to a 133 MB/s max PATA channel.
