I'm getting a message when i start up my xps2 saying the following \windows\system32\config\system missing or corrupt file

I've tried to follow the repair instructions but having no joy at the moment.
Looked on MS website and found a solution but this applies to non oem windows xp users and wont work on my laptop.

I phoned dell uk but they will charge me for helping.

I could reformat but dont want to lose some stuff i have on the hard drive.

Can anyone help me with this please?

What steps did you take to repair it?
My normal process is to boot to the recovery console and run CHKDSK /P.
If that fails, I run a repair install of XP (select repair the second time you see it during setup).

I tried running the repair cosole from the windows setup disk and then tried to input some commands that i got from microsoft's xp site. Cant get past the first one though as dos tells me it cant find the file, but then i noticed that the instructions were for non oem installed versions of windows.

Many thanks for the chdsk /p option, it worked a treat, now working nicely again.
