When I try and download 3dmark I am only getting a download speed of approx 30kb/s yet when i unplug my wirelss router and plug in the ethernet to my computer and start it again, it goes up to 100kb/s. if wireless goes at 54mb/s then why is it struggling to download at 100kb/s!?

Maybe it has something to do with the way my network is set up? I have 3 computers going into a regular router and the wireless router is connected to that to. the regular router goes to the internet. My computer connects through the wireless router. The wireless router is the dmz of the regular router, and I am the dmz of the wireless router.

It also has to do that the wireless tends to be more inefficent than wired. Packects can be lost to noise, connection problems, etc.

30K is still very good..

ya but is not 100kb/s over 3x more what you just said was good lol?

Yes, 30K is good.

Look, a 56G connection will never actually achieve a full 56M speed. At least half of it is TCP overhead, and that is assuming that you make the full connection. 11b is just as bad...

Uhm, NO.

We are talking 54mbps. A 100k cap on a cable modem uses 800kilobit/s. That is a 99.985% loss.

No, 30k is not good. I have 802.11b and I have 250kilobyte/s caps, and I get MORE than that! With wireless!

Sure, you will never achieve a full 54mbps theoretical bandwidth, but 99.98% of that is not overhead, lol. Less than 10% would be. Then collisions. Then the ocassional lost packet.

But something isn't right, because that is too much of a loss.

Perhaps it was just that one file you were downloading? Just because you have cable doesn't mean you will download everything at 100k.

Incorrect.. search these forums, and you will see that.

Much of 802.11G is overhead (~50%)
Yes, i know that even THAT bandwidth is enough for 100k....

check the connection percentage when going through wireless. Maybe ur running too many wireless things including phones and such. Maybe your trying to go through too many walls. There are a lot of factors that change. If you're right next to the router and still get bad speeds, maybe ur router is bad.

cable is shared bandwidth. so if everyone in your neighborhood is downloading mad warez at the time you will get slower throughput.
also if everyone is downloading from the same site you are then your speed will suffer
there are a ton of things which can affect performance and wireless only adds another factor that can go wrong.
try changing the channel in your router setup
