Canadian looking for a desktop replacement laptop

Thread Starter
Hi, all. I'm considering getting completely rid of my desktop and going solely to a laptop. What I'm looking for is a laptop that can handle basically anything from high end gaming (doesn't have to have max resolution; I'm highly unlikely to ever want to run 1920-1600 or whatever WUXGA runs on a game as I'm unlikely to be able to read anything).

I was wondering if anyone has any ideas what type of laptop that meets these specs would be best for a Canadian. I'd prefer one where I don't have to ship the laptop back to the US for repairs if they become necessary.

I've heard Eurocoms are good. Dell used to be good, but I understand the Geforce Go 5650 is VERY substandard compared to the Radeon, so I am likely to skip it.

Anyone have any ideas which would be the best choice of laptop, who has the best service and which gives the best bang for the buck?

I'm looking to spend around $3000-$3300 Canadian for a machine (about $2500 or so US)

If you want to buy in Canada, Eurocom is the best dealer I could find - but they are really overpriced. The only way to bring their prices down somewhat is to take advantage of their trade-in policy: Ship a working, used laptop or desktop system (PII minimum, the desktop needs to come with a working monitor), and you get a 20% discount.

Let's look at the numbers: For something like pctorque's 5680, configured as 3ghz P4, 60gig 7200 rpm drive, CDRW/DVD, 1gig ram, UXGA screen, internal wireless, Eurocom will charge about $4100CAD. With the 20% discount, you get $820 off, so you end up paying $3280CAD, closer to your budget. You should be able to pick up a used PII system for around $50-100CAD if you look hard enough. so total cost is around $3350 + $50 shipping + tax.

Now let's look at PCTorque. For a 5680 similarly configured, you will pay $2129 ($2080 cash discounted). Add $150 shipping, and you're at $2279/$2230. With exchange just over 1.3 nowadays, you're total is $2962/$2899 + tax.

So the question you have to ask is: If you do have to ship your laptop back for repairs, etc, is it worth paying an extra $400-$500 to ship within Canada?

I chose PCTorque as my US example since they are the cheapest I've found for the Sagers. I haven't purchased anything from them...yet

I'm from Canada and I got a Sager 8890. Whats wrong with shipping back to the US. I think nothing. Anyway it's highly unlikely you will ever have to ship it back anyway. Plus the sager 8890 is the king of performance.

price match

I was in the same situation as you and I called them to know why they were more expensive. They didn't give me an answer to that question but they offer to price match PC Torque. The only problem I get is when it was time to order (D500P equivalent to Sager 5680) the guy told me that he couldn't match that price which was at that time about 2400$ cnd and the best price he could give was 2800$. I argue with him on the phone and after about 45 min. he said that he would charge 100$ more than PC Torque. He said that the reason was that if I ordered from PC Torque, I'd have to pay 100$ for the shipping. Finally I get my D500P for 2500$cnd which was at that time about 900$ less than the price on their website and no borders hassles.

You should try to ask them for a price match but the problem with Eurocom is that the support is not as great as PC Torque seem to be and the shipping is very long. It took 1 month between the time I ordered and when I received it. It was early september when the model came out, so maybe they had a lot of orders with not enough system??
