clock speed not reaching potential

Thread Starter
I'm running an ASUS Z70V I've had for a couple months with the following specs: 1.86GHz Dothan, 533MHz FSB. I recently reinstalled windows, and now when I run Prime95, CPU-Z and System Properties report the clock speed at 1.4GHz, not 1.86GHz like before. I'm haven't used CHC or RMClock since the reinstall. I think the bus is running at 100MHz instead of 133MHz. Any ideas why, or what I can change to let they system run as fast as it can? Thanks for any info.

Ok guys, I figured it out. Simple matter of Power Management table in Windows.. I had one of the modes using "degrade" turned on.

What did you change exactly?
I am having this exact problem (running at 100Mhz instead of 133) but messing with power settings isn't helping.
The Power Scheme is set at Always On or Home Office Desktop (I've tried everything), but it is still only running at 1400Mhz (100Mhz * 14) instead of 1866Mhz (133Mhz * 14)

I've tried using CHC to change it, but it can only change the multiplier, not the bus speed.

Can someone help?

Are you using a Z70v? I know the Z71A/Vs have a switch that tells the board to run at 100 or 133MHz FSBs. It's hardware so no software could change that.

If you're using a Z70v... Then... There's something wrong as the power profiles do not affect FSB clocks, only multipliers.

hey, actually i've been having the same problem. any ideas? doesn't have anything to do with dipswitches or anything. gotta be software.
oh, it's on my Asus Z70V as well
hmm... very weird. but i turned it off, went out to do work, came back three hours later, turned it on, and it was back to 1.73GHz. Very strange, because i definitely rebooted a few times to see if that would work.

maybe heat?

Lol
You troll. I saw you on another forum. Cant recall where
Its not the heat. Its you

Anyone find a solution to this problem yet?

I've been seeing this off and on. Most of the time a simple restart solves the problem. However, recent attempts to restart/cold start my laptop haven't fixed this issue.

I've been running RMClock and Speedfan to control heat/noise. There may be a connection between these programs and the bus speed.

You may need to disable "dynamic switching".

I don't know what to say. I thought I'd fixed the problem by changing my Windows Power Profile, but I'm once again back at 1.4 GHz. CPU-Z reports "core speed: 1386.5 MHz, multiplier: x14.0, FSB: 99.8 MHz, bus speed: 399.0 MHz". Even when I boot into Knoppix, the CPU is recognized as "Pentium M Processor 1.86 GHz 1396 MHz". Therefore, I think this is not a Windows software issue. I also disabled BIOS power management, to no avail. BIOS still reports the speed as 1867 MHz, however.

So, why are both Windows and Linux utilizing an FSB of 100 instead of 133 MHz? Does the Z70V have a switch, too, and could it be loose? Does anybody know why the FSB is changing like this? I want all of my 1.86 GHZ, dammit!

Ok, I just went back and re-read your posts. First off, in your first post, you say it's reading 1.4Ghz instead of 1.86 "like before". What do you mean "like before". The Z70V does not have a dip switch, so here is my next question- do you have the jumper wire in there to make it run at 133mhz instead of 100mhz? Even though your chip is a 533mhz FSB chip, you still need to do the pin mod to make the FSB run at 133mhz.

"Like before", as in I'm having the same problem I had in the original post once again. I have not modded anything. However, in the past CPU-Z and System Properties have reported a speed of 1.86 GHz. I also have updated the BIOS to 0206, which is supposed to clear up a false reporting of clock frequency in Windows. Here's what's happening right now (Always On Profile, no RMClock/CHC, Power Mgmt off in bios":

I thought the Dothan is 100 MHz and it's the Sonoma that is 133 MHz. What processor do you have? The P-M 745(1.8 GHz, 400 fsb Dothan) or the P-M 750 (1.86 GHz, 533 fsb Sonoma)?

It's a 533MHz FSB (Sonoma). Should be 133MHz, I don't know why it's showing Dothan/100MHz.
If it was running at 133 before the re-install, it seems to me like you forgot to reset or re-load something. For some reason, your system is seeing a Dothan and not the Sonoma. Have you used anything else to check your CPU speed? What does it read when you run CHC? I know I was getting conflicting readings between CPU-Z and CHC for a while.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't the reinstall. AIDA in Windows and the hardware autoconfiguration in Knoppix say 1.4 GHz too, though. The computer hasn't been off for weeks, though. I'll let it cool down--I think someone already mentioned it might be clocking down due to heat. (Ironically, I didn't undervolt this time, because I thought that meddling might have been causing the problem.)

Not sure if this is the same issue. But just have a look.

Mine shows 319MHz in the Systems panel (PM 2.0GHz and a 2GB Ram)

Max speed at 798Mhz.

Did you guys install the intel INF chipset update for Windows XP? (should come with your Asus notebooks on the CD or on the website)
Perhaps XP does not fully recognize the i915 chipset and thus does not report the speed properly.

Well, letting the machine be off for about half an hour and restarting fixed the problem temporarily (before going back to 1.4 GHz a couple days later). I THINK I installed the chipset update after the reinstall, but I'm not sure. I just [re?]installed it and restarted, and things are fine now. Hopefully that was it (dumb, huh?), but I'll be sure to post if things change again. Peace. And thanks, AuroraS.
