about to do AS5 and pin mod on i600m

hey all, i have been browsing and searching on the forum for awhile now, and have had my i600m for about 2 months. i have the 1.8ghz pentium M Dothan 745 chip, with the 400mhz fsb, and i just ordered AS5. it also has ati mobility radeon 9000 64mb graphics. ( i know it sucks, i just want to squeeze out as much performance as possible) i have been playing hl2 and beat it on this system, and it ran pretty smooth, it would just occasionally start to get choppy i guess from the gpu overheating, so i got the I8kfangui utility and would set the fan on high and it would usually be fine. after reading around here a bit more i tested my system with 3dmark03 (i was unable to run 05 because of pixel shader 2.0 being required, i only have 1.4) and initially scored ~330. needless to say i was very dissapointed, found the omega drivers for the ati moblity radeon, and using centrino hardware control undervolted the processor and overclocked the gpu to 270/235(default is 220/200), and scored ~1250. i was very pleased with this improvement, but now i want more. i intend to pin mod, apply the as5 to the cpu and gpu, and further overclock the gpu if possible. is this a good idea? if it is unstable at 2.4, i figure i will lower the max multiplier. will the 600m chassis be able to cope well with the additional heat? oh and i have also run super_pi at 1M and it completed the calculations in 44 seconds. we will see how she does if all goes well. hope this works, thanks in advance for any input/thoughts/suggestions.

Which chipset do you have? According to the specs it's an 855 chipset which can't be pinmodded.

Correct. You need 915PM Alviso chipset to perform pinmod.

Also, 745 looks little bit too high to be pinmodded for a small laptop. People did it with 9300, but even there I've seen some heat issue complaints.

I take it you haven't reformatted your harddrive since you got your system. Al that Dell crap is probably bogging your system down which is why you only got 330 on your 3dmark score. I ran it last night on my 600m at stock speeds and got 1,120 and with it running at the same overclocked speeds as you did got 1,310. I reformatted and reinstalled everything when my system was about 2 months old. The performance increase was very noticeable.

sorry for the newb q's, but i was under the impression any processor with a 400mhz fsb could do the pin mod. is that why i havent heard of any other 600m's doing this mod is because of the chipset? anyway what about the gpu, witht he as5 will i be able to further overclock it? where would i check the chipset? thanks.

I wouldn't disassemble laptop just to put AS5 on GPU. Benefits are not worth the truble IMHO.

As of where you check the chipset: googgle, download and install Everest Home edition program. it is free. it will give you the most complete information about your system.

Motherboard Chipset= Intel Odem i855PM, according to everest home edition
i guess that rules out this possiblity, why is it that this board cant be pin modded? as i said my concern about the temps can be resolved by a reducing max multiplier.

its not that hard to get in there, and if i can keep the temps down ~5 degrees celsius i think it would still be worth it.

Your board cannot be pinmodded because it uses older chipset which does not allow this trick to work.

As of putting AS5 on GPU, it's really your call.

alright thanks all for your input youve been really helpful and patient with me. last thing i want to know, would it be possible to swap motherboards, or is there any other common performance mods for the 600m?

I think you'll be better off buying a brand new laptop. MB might cost you up to $500. Besides, I don't believe Dell has another MB for 600m with 915PM chipset.

Just wait for those $750 off coupons. I got my 6000D for $800, if you have Pentium M 745, it will work there (and might be extremely fast too).

There is a really cool program called ClockGen (or GenClock, I can't remember). It is for the desktops, but one guy managed to use it on Toshiba laptop and it allowed him to overclock. You might search and try it, although I doubt it will work on 600m. It didn't work on my 700M.

I am not aware of any other perf mods for 600m.

Good luck.

Yeah, the only real performance/heat mods for the 600m would be the GPU overclocking, CPU undervolting, and CPU+GPU heat mods....

Chipsets don't just support any FSB processor, they only support certain types - for example an Intel 845 desktop board can only take up to the 533Mhz FSB P4's , but not the 800Mhz P4's, you need an 865/875 for this.

When you pinmod the socket, you are basically making the 400Mhz Pentium-m act like a 533Mhz FSB pentium-m, however since the 855 chipset does not suppport 533Mhz processors (either proper ones or pinmodded ones) then it simply won't work with the pin mod in place.
