Recovery Console in XP Home

Nice forums! I bought my Sager last May as I was getting ready for Med School (got the 5620, went pretty top of the line for last May, but, you know how that is, already out of date, but still rocks!). I am having problems with my CD drive. I got the Toshiba SD-R2102 DVD/CD-RW combo drive. I think that the driver somehow became corrupted, because it isn't working anymore. It will open, spin a disc, but the device manager says that the driver could not load. Since it just runs of a Windows driver, I somehow need to get that installed off the Windows XP Home cd. So, I booted from the disc and then tried to use the Recovery Console, but it asks for the admin password, which it doesn't think is mine, even though I am listed as the comp admin in the user settings (I am the only one to ever use this comp). Any ideas, or do I just need to do a complete install by booting to the cd drive? Thanks.

Well, something you can try...
Go to your device manager right click and uninstall your CD Drive. Without rebooting, right click and also uninstall your secondary IDE Channel under IDE Controllers. Reboot and let it reinstall it to see if that helps. Also try reseating it, sliding it out and plugging it back in. Reloading the OS is usually a good thing especially if you have the original load since last May =)

Thanks. One more question. If I do a full reinstall of WinXP Home, am I going to lose the data I have on my computer? Or will it just overwrite and repair Windows files? Thanks again.

Hi Jexxster, I had the same problems with the admin password last week while trying to do a reinstall. First off, YES YOU WILL LOOSE ALL DATA, FOLDERS, FILES, AND PROGRAMS, if you do a full reinstall, and you can put your admin password in till the cows come home, but here's the way to do it. That first screen that gives you the option of selecting "Recovery" or "New Install", pick "New Install", now on this new screen read carefully and you will see that it also gives you the option to do a recovery, and for some reason it doesn't ask for a pass word. Just to let you know though, when mine was finished, everything turned out fine, all my programs, files, folders and settings were intact, except for the screen resolution which had to be reset. So, good luck and let me know how it went.

Thanks for the reply. I actually just ended up reformatting my HD and then doing a clean install. Compared to my experience trying to do the same with my (old) desktop running Win 98, this was a breeze, super easy and without a hitch, and things are running really fast and efficient right now. Also, as I have my laptop set up on a home network with my desktop, I was able to back everything up there, and then get it back with no problems. If I ever need to do this again, I will try your recommendation.
