Ferrari 3200 Slot Drives - Possible to Buy/Self Install?

Hi,

My slot loading CD rom drive on my F3200 is being naughty - it only works about 5% of the time. I hear it trying to run the CD, but it fails. Then it tries again and so on.

Acer said they'd replace it - but I don't want to without my machine for 2 or 3 weeks while they do it.

Can anyone advise if I can purchase a new CD rom drive for the F3200 somewhere, and if it's self-installable - is it just a matter of change one piece of hardware for another, or does one have to do some software trickery as well?

Ta,

Wrafter

Yes you can do it yourself. You'll have to take out the keyboard and you'll see that the DVD drive is held by one screw. Take the screw out and slide the drive out. Install a new one.

Do this only if you are confident in using a screw driver and opening up your machine. Down load the service manual here for details on taking your machine apart.

Thank you very much Rustican - can you point me to someplace online where it's possible to purchase the DVD drive for the 3200?

The best place would be to try and get it from Acer. Try calling their service center and ordering the part. I don't know of any place offhand that sells the Ferrari 3200 slot drive itself.
