Top Centrino's

Thread Starter
Greetings.

I'm hoping this christmas will be a deluxe edition.
My brother and I are hoping to get a few new laptops 'under the tree...
He isn't all that savvy with notebooks so a gummed down version of my laptop might work for him, but he wants a "completely wireless" laptop - therefore; Im thinkin Centrino is the best way to go (I Myself would love one too)
Ok, So I've narrowed it down to the Centrino family processors..
Let me get a rundown of the specs I'd like to see:

-Centrino (1.4Ghz) - I suppose a higher speed would work, but higher is more costly..
-At leat 512MB RAM
-ATi Radeon 9600
-Screen no smaller than 15.4' (Widescreen prefer) - Would like an IMMACULATE crisp, bright screen
-40+GB Hard-disk (Would rather go with a 5400rpm drive)

Those are my main concerns... Bluetooth would be nice
The problem here is the budget. I'm not sure how far over $3,000 my father would be willing to spend on the combined total (Maybe a co. would offer some sort of discount for 2 identical models?)
Any suggestions and comments are very welcome..

There are only three Centrino laptops that I know of that have ATi 9600 graphics and that cost about $1500 or less. They are:

For $1379, the Internetishop model AO57C13F.

For $1459, the Internetishop model AO57C15G.

For $1599, the Gateway M505X.

The only one of these that I have personal experience with is the Gateway M505. See my preview here.

I second the Gateway 505X or xl. I've looked and played with it at my local Gateway store and it is one nice unit. I'm still within my 30 day return period of my Alienware Area-51m. It has caused me some problems and I'm thinking about returning it. My first choice for the money would be the 505xl. Now if money were no object the Centrino based Voodoo m:460 with the ATI 9600 with 128 megs would be the one I'd get. I don't know if I love it enough to the tune of about $3800 smackers though.

I second ABS Computers. I am in the process of ordering mine. Two things which bug me though, the screen (only XGA) and the memory (only @ 266mhz). I'm going to call them and find out if they can upgrade my memory to 333mhz. If they can, i'm going with them. They are made using the same chasis as the AOpen line of computers, which are reputable, and look great. Check out the ZFORCE F2. If i don't go ahead with them, i'm going to order the M505XL.

I found this thread about the ABS zForce F2. According to BUD212002, "the screen was terrible. There was no "real" dim function. It was either glowing or so dim you could barely read it."
