What to do what to do......Wait for XPS Gen 2 with 7800gtx OR Wait for Clevo fx-57.

is the dell xps gen 2 better or is the clevo going to be better, but is it worth the wait, and how will both models compare if the have the new 7800gtx(if the clevo has it at all)????

They're putting the fx-57 in a notebook? Ouchie...that's gonna be an expensive toy.

It depends on what video card the Clevo FX-57 has in it. If its not a 7800 GTX then the XPS 2 with the 7800 GTX is going to be faster. The CPU doesn't affect gaming performance nearly as much as the video card does and Pentium M's are very fast for gaming as well. The high-end Pentium M 770's and 780's will compete with the FX-55/FX-57's in gaming performance.

How do u think the athlon fx-57 will affect portability and battery life?

IF the clevo has a 7800gtx, then what will be the better choice (consider price and value) ?
I would get the FX 57 or dual core 4800.

That machine will definately get the 7800 or whatever new GPU that is released.
Yeah but I doubt you can get one for $1700 like you could an XPS2. Probably going to be $3500+ for that Clevo.

I just priced a HypersonicPC version and it was over $5,000.

but dou guys think the clevo will be worth the money, if not why so... by the way do hypersonic and other clevo manufacturers give coupons like dell 30-40% off..

will dell xps gen 2 with 7800gtx give a clevo a run for its money?

Buying a laptop with an FX-57...

...you'll be able to cook meat on the underside - and never, EVER put on on your bare lap if you wish to procreate.

Didn't you start a thread similar to this one?

I would get the XPS simply because of the price and portability of the XPS. The AMD Athlon/FX line of processors are really good when it comes to gaming but you will only get about 25 minutes of battery life, that notebook will be extremely hot and heavy, and it currently doesn't come with the Nvidia GeForce Go 6800 Ultra. If it comes with the 7800GTX, then it would be good. However, the XPS will be thinner than the Clevo, run cooler, you can actually run it on its battery, it features dual-channel DDR2 memory (isn't much of an increase from DDR memory but still), and the price of the XPS Gen. 2/M170 will be a lot better with the coupons (or even without the coupons). Additionally, Dell has a on-site warranty so you won't have to ship the notebook back to the manufacturer.

Either one will be good but it really depends on what you want to run. If you are into processor intensive apps and don't care about battery life, then the Clevo will be better. If you want to have great gaming performance, descent battery life, a cool running notebook, and a on-site warranty, then get the XPS.

Huh...this is a dell forum, what do you think people are going to say?

I'd wait for a dual-core laptop to be honest. The fx-57 will churn out a bunch of heat, and IMO the XPS gen 2, even with a 7800gtx "go" will be obselete the moment a 64-bit, dual core pentium m is available. They're slated for early Q1/2006 (read: January, feel free to google em).

Like they said, the games aren't CPU limited right now anyway, so notebooks are at a distinct advantage in that the switch to dual core will have likely negligable impact on performance in single-threaded games, but will have the added bonus of multitasking, 64-bit computing, and compatibility with Vista and other programs due to be released soon-ish. In short, since intel has shown no sign of using the same mobos like amd did, the current pentium-m is likely at the end of it's update path and will become obselete in the next 4-5 months.

PS- Note that I define obselete as "not being worth the money for the value" in this sense. There are some people who will say "I am still able to play games on it, how is that obselete? Only when my laptop can do NOTHING will it be obselete." That is not what I am saying. I'm saying, for new purchasers, the cost/value ratio of the goods on the market will make the current pentium ms highly undesirable in a short matter of time.

PPS- For background, I just bought a 9300, knowing full well I intend to sell it around christmas. It's just a "bridge" for me until I can build my desktop.

I feel Dell will release a dual core laptop within 4 or 5 months maybe in Dec'Jan'Feb or march . I have been waiting and it is getting close. Now even tho it will take a couple of years for software and games to be written but man I cant wait for 64 bit and dual processors. It's in the working they already have desktops I feel it's only right around the corner.

jeffcmfrt , would you recommend for me to buy a xps gen 2 NOW when the 7800gtx comes out or still wait for the dual core intels?????

and between the clevo and gen2 now which would u recommend?

There are still rumors floating around about the new Pentium M processors. Intel will shortly release a dual-core Pentium M processor though it WILL BE a 32-bit processor, not a 64-bit processor unless Intel plans on surprising people with a 64-bit Pentium M. Currently they keep stating that they don't have any plans for releasing a 64-bit Pentium M processor until the market demands it.

Because the way Intel keeps talking about things, I doubt this new dual-core Pentium M processor will be a 64-bit processor. I hope it will be a 64-bit processor, then I would definately put a single or dual core version of these in the XPS (if they use the same sockets and Dell releases a BIOS update).

Dual-Core 64-bit processors are already being made by both Intel and AMD for desktop machines, it just may take some time to get this technology to notebooks.
