Gateway M675 review and banchmarks - Page 3

Yes, that's exactly the problem. Unfortunately I can't find any store around here that is able to test SO-DIMMs at PC3200, so I have no idea what the deal is. Where did you order from by chance? I, too, have another set of DIMMs coming tomorrow, and will try it again then.

wogg,

My memory came from Top Micro. They're a good bunch of people. I'll post back on how the second set goes when it arrives. Hopefully your second set will clear it up!
kuldaan, when does your new set of memory arrive? Mine was supposed to come in the same box as my 7200rpm hard drive, but it did not, so I'll have to straighten that out.

I also talked to Gateway tech, and he seemed determined to get that ram working in my system. Most every other dumbf___ techs I've talked to said they've never seen PC3200 ram run in a notebook, so it must not be possible!! Idiots.

Anyways, keep me updated :P

I had exact same problem Kuldaan and Wogg mentioned with two sticks of Geil 512MB PC3200 RAM. I was trying to upgrade my Toshiba P15-S409. I got the memory from newegg.

I am very keen to know what are the results of your replacement memory. I will follow the same path.

Thanks and keep me updated.

The replacement memory did not work either, it came earlier this morning (Friday) and I've spent the whole day experimenting with it in various combinations. Just as before, it works fine in a "mixed" setup with one piece of the original DDR 2700 memory and one piece of the GeIL 3200.

I contacted GeIL and offered to let them borrow my notebook for a couple days, but I haven't heard back.

Sorry for the bad news. I'll relay any developments that I hear. For now, I'm holding onto both pairs of memory to see what comes of it.

Same problem with Geil Memory here

Nothing will boot.

Did anyone come to any solution to the problem?

Thanks!

Go ahead and add your comments to the thread on geilusa.com: http://www.geilusa.com/forum2/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=63

This seems to be a very common problem, and the more people that speak up about it, the better chance something will get done about it There is someone that is checking up on it, but who knows how long that could take.

Solution? Yeah. Don't buy Geil. lol

When I got my M675 a couple months ago I put 2 sticks of Apacer 512MB PC3200 RAM into my system and had no problems.

Apacer is good memory.. Same stuff Sager puts in their machines.
Where do you buy Apacer?

Sp0rk......

Since I was dumb enough to buy the Geil RAM can you share some info with me?

What are the CL timings on that RAM you bought? I'm curious to know if that is the cause of our problems. If I look at the timings on the memory that shipped with my system, it is 2.5. I was wondering if you had the same on your APACER memory.

For some additional information on the problem.....I talked to Gateway tech support on it for about a hour yesterday. None of their specs said my machine would support the 400 mhz RAM. They couldn't tell me it wouldn't but they also didn't say it would. They also wouldn't sell me 400 mhz RAM to go in my system. It was reserved for all people buying a brand new system. I had about 3 hours at that point. I guess that's not new enough.

I am also curious where you bought your memory. If you have the part number it would be really helpful.

I'll share info as it becomes available!

Yes, my Apacer memory is 2.5CL 400MHz PC-3200. 2x 512MB Sticks running in dual-channel mode.

PC3200 SODIMMS are frikkin' hard to find online from a 3rd party. I ordered mine from www.bytewizecomputers.com about 2 months ago when I got my system. $132 a stick.

I just looked at their website now and they don't have it anymore

So unless you can find someplace else to order it, the only other option is to order it directly from Sager.

http://www.sagernotebook.com/pages/n...ccessories.cfm

Choose the 5680 or 8890 and you'll find the RAM.

Only downside is Sager charges $170 a stick.. ouch.

Note: On the Sager website it doesn't say Apacer, not sure if that's what Sager is still using. I'm sure they are. If you goto the Sager review forum and look at the reviews Adam@pctorque did on the 5680/8890, you'll see that's what memory they use.

It looks like the problem is in the timings.....

I joined the thread on the Geil tech support site.....

One of the tech support guys answered back the Geil memories timing is CAS 3.

The memory I received from Gateway is CAS 2.5 and the Apacer Memory (in sp0rk's machine) is CAS 2.5.

So my lack of bootability is more than likely caused by this problem. I'm hoping Geil has a solution, but I'm not betting on it.

Off to find a Apacer reseller.....

Looks like Apacer memory is hard to find also......

Both the site I bought my memory from (topmicrousa) and NewEgg have the PC3200 SO-DIMM Geil memory listed at CAS 2.5. According to Geil tech support, they don't make memory with those specs. CAS 3 is their standard for PC3200 SO-DIMMs.

I know I read somewhere in the forums this memory worked with the 675. I just gotta find it and see if that person will share the memory timings on his memory. I guess Gateway could have changed their motherboard vendor and might have caused problems also.

Anyway I placed an order with a company in California for PC3200 memory. I'll let you know how it turns out. It won't be here until a week from Monday (1/12) (too cheap to pay for good shipping).

I noticed the CNET review here is unfair since it doesn't utilize the full potential of the 800MHz FSB by using 333MHz SDRAM. However the Eurocom D500P does use the 400MHz SDRAM in there comparision. I wonder if they even new it had an 800MHz FSB since there was no mention of it throughout the whole review!

I agree.....also

They failed to get the hard drive correct also. As far as I know there isn't a 80 gig 7200 hard drive. The 80 gig from Gateway is 5400 RPM. If any of those tests taxed the hard drive, it would skew the results also.

I have never put too much stock in CNET and their ability to review a product.

oh well, you get what you pay for!

I'll have to read the whole review a little later

Hey guys. This is my first opportunity to post to the forums and I'm glad to be part of the discussion. I just recieved my very first laptop today. I opted for the Gateway M675CS. I was able to opt for the 128 9600 Pro only when selecting the bottom-line proc (2.8 Ghz). I'm not sure what to think of it yet. I mean, the screen looks great and it runs just fine as long as I'm not doing anything graphically intense. I was playing Tribes2 with all of the settings turned up as I was trying to test the machine. Everything was working fine for about 90 minutes. After that, she just locked up and seemed very much like a heat issue. So, I shut it down and fired it back up again and attempted to play Counter-Strike 1.6. I got about 5 seconds into the game and got the lock-up again.

Like I said, I'm new to the notebook arena. Is this kind of behavior normal for notebooks?

Thanks in advance for everybody's time.

Is everything directly from the manufacturer? I would do a memtest. The 675 doesnt come w/ a PRO. Did they actually quote you with it having a 9600 PRO?

Here's what I did when I got my new machine.....

I got my laptop (675) on Dec 31. The first thing I did was fire it up and run SiSoftware Utilities. I ran their stress test for 20 reps. It took nearly 4.5 hours to run. Nothing melted down so I assumed it was a solid laptop. Those aren't graphic intensive tests but they drive the temp of the system up quiet a bit. I got the 3.0 gig processor and bought and installed a 7200 rpm 60 gig hard drive.

The other thing to check is make sure there is plenty of ventilation under the machine. I use a lapdesk when it's sitting on my lap.

If you've done that and are still having problems, I'd contact Gateway tech support maybe they can assist in determining what else might be a problem.

Good luck!
